Is it normal that my hamster urinates on his food?

My hamster has a 'wee corner' of sorts, the only place in his cage where is urinates. Thing is, lately he's been putting some of his food in that corner, he doesn't eat the food once it's in there, but he's putting it there and I don't know why. Is it normal for him to do this or is there something wrong? I don't want him to put loads in the corner, because it's a waste of his food.

Yeah just try and put a bit more saw dust in his wee corner so it can absorb his urine.

Tori's right. He's trying to absorb the smell. Animal urine is quite strong to them and can cause nosebleeds and illness.
Get some (hard wood!) shavings (pine and cedar are strong scented, thus also causing bleeding). If you can't find hard wood shavings, use an upside down stone tile (bumps up), brick or fill a small box (Kleenex) with shredded/ripped newspaper.

  • One of my hamsters did this once too, they began to move food into the pee corner for some reason. Eventually they chose to pee elsewhere in the cage thankfully.

Maybe he is trying to cover up his pee. Do you have enough shavings in his cage? I used to have pet rats. I cleaned their cage every other day. They did the same thing.

    • Yeah I use loads of shavings, not too much, but enough to cover the whole cage floor

I wouldn't say it's abnormal, animals are unpredictable little things! He's developed a habbit, he may grow out of it though

Maybe he/she wants to make a toilet out of it???

    Derp.
Do some research on hamsters & see if this behavior is normal. You can research online, or if you hate reading...
Go to the pet store and ask an expert.
    Hurp.
