Is it normal that my nightmares sometimes last a long time afterwards?

I had a vivid nightmare the other night in which I had discovered a cellar under my apartment, I went down with a torch. Then I saw an old painting that changed its appearance at a second glance, it gave me such a fright that I dropped my torch and was left in the dark with a paranormal phenomenon. I cried and prayed to god in the dark, and I knew that nobody was going to find me in there. Towards the end of the dream my old pet dog (who is deceased) came up to me snuffling. I could feel her wet nose in the dark. After the dream I spent hours in a state where breathing was difficult and my heart was beating wildly. I fell asleep again, but when I woke up my heart was still beating hard and it did so for the rest of the day.
I constantly felt like I was still in the abandoned cellar, even when I was awake.

While I do really like the third option for some reason, nightmares are normal. If this sort of thing keeps happening though, try changing your sleep habits.

I've had dreams like that. Where something changes in the blink of an eye and you just feel it to the core that it's wrong, that its... It's almost a sickening feeling when it happens. Sickening fear. And when you look at it logically it's not that scary, but for some reason in the nightmare scape it's the most horrifying thing in the not-world.

I had a nightmare before where something had gotten into my back at the end just before I woke up and when I woke up my back really hurt and it took five minutes to subside. But I think I was only physically affected after the dream usually when I wake up even if the dream is very vivid, it'll be able to adjust to reality a while after I wake up. but you might want to read up on sleep disorders if this keeps happening or just for knowledge. Some people are in scary sleep experiences like that of worse in the sleep disorder books I read.

I apologize this happened to you. I can personally vouch vivid nightmares are not fun. Agreed with above, if you find yourself constantly having nightmares, talk to someone about it :)
