Is it normal that my sister does this?

I have always shared a room with my sister, and for years she has been making this grinding sound with her teeth while she is sleeping. It is a really loud scratching sound that sounds like two rocks scraping together, but it has never affected her teeth. She also can't make the sound when she is awake so I have no idea how she does it, whether it is with her teeth or maybe saliva? IIN?

She should get a "night guard" from her dentist to protect her teeth. It's quite a common thing.

Have you tried making her sleep with a gum shield in her mouth?

It may not be affecting her teeth now, but it will- they will get worn down. She really needs to tell her dentist, and get a night guard made. There's also a strong possibility that she's grinding or clenching during the day, so she should make a conscious effort not to do it during the day, to help break the habit at night.

It's called 'grinding her teeth together', my step-dad does it. it's normal but it will affect her teeth in the future but she seriously needs to tell her dentist this so he can do something about it like buy a mouth guard ..,
