Is it normal that my toe gives out when walking?

About ten years ago I was at work doing retail and was on a ladder and I thought I was at the ground so I sort of jumped off. Well I wasnt at the bottom, I was three steps up and had my right big toe sticking out when landing. So basically all my weight went to my big toe. Landing like a ballet dancer when they jump. Well I wasnt that graceful. So it hurt like, well you know. I thought I stubbed it no big deal. So pain continued and went away with no swelling. But I kept looking at my toe nail which had a reddish tint line to it. I shrugged it off thinking I landed on my toe nail.
Fast forward a year and I still have pain but like a dull ache and feeling of things floating around my foot and still that dark mark under my toe nail. I decided to go to the doctors and found out that I had broken my big toe up in the middle of my foot and had broken fragments floating around. It had already healed and they couldnt do anything for me but remove the fragments. I had them remove the fragments since they hurt everytime I walked.
So now I still have pain there and it is dull and achy. And every once in awhile if I put pressure on a certain area I feel like my toe gives out. And my muscle/tendons spasm and cramp up. They did say I might have arthritis there later. Is this arthritis pain? I dont see swelling. Is this normal after surgery after years?
