Is it normal that online, people assume i am a guy?

I'm female, but online everyone automatically assumes I am male. I am into science, programming, and horror movies, but I do write about a variety of topics, including more "female" ones... but everyone always assumes I'm a guy and many are surprised when they find out I'm female. My usernames are pretty generic, not gender specific, mostly just related to my interests. Just wondering if this is normal, or if other girls have experienced the same thing.

It happens to me. And I found it odd when it came up in the same conversation where I mentioned being pregnant.

It happens to me even if I have written something in a bio that says I'm a woman. I guess I must type with testosterone:P

    • That's what I was wondering about myself too... do I write like a guy or something? :/

It happens all the time. Generally, in my experience it is more common for people to assume that anonymous people on the internet are male. Though it seems the opposite happens as well. I'm a guy and some people here actually used to think I was female. I don't know if it was due to the nature of the topics I respond to or the way I word my responses, but I think is all comes down to gender stereotypes that we subconsciously apply. I was told I was too "nice" to be a guy. I think most people are assumed to be male because people are generally more blunt on the internet and maybe that is something associated with males? Your guess is as good as mine.

I used to work in tech support for a satellite tv company and people would slip up and call me sir.

That's because everyone online IS a man. Have you not read the rules of the internet?

I'm the same. I'm a girl but it's actually rare for people to to realize my gender online.

    • Yeah C++, C#, and Java (hate Java!!) are the languages I know best. Also know Unix and a bit of Ajax, SQL, and Prolog from courses I took last semester. :)

I've been playing World of Warcraft for about 5 years now and male players often assume that everyone else is male. You get used to it after a while. Sometimes I play one of my male characters and I think it's fun fooling other male players. They never suspect that I'm female. ^.^

Still better than assuming that male is a female. That case happens a lot.

I was assumed a girl a couple of times. It happens.

I do too but I like it and have stopped correcting people... it's more fun to play online games as "one of the guys" rather than getting hit on and/or assumed to be ''inferior'' in certain ways

Agreed, playing online with people knowing I'm a female usually leads to getting harassed by lonely guys or being given special treatment :P if people assume I'm male they treat me as an equal n playing is more enjoyable!

      • The lonely guy thing has happened to me a few times, glad to know I am not the only one!

Though on the other side, why do you find it an issue? Tbh I only correct people when I'm pissed off (probably pmt lol) or when I want to shock or interest them ;)

    • Yeah I generally don't tell anyone anymore either!

Completely normal, most people on the internet will assume you're a guy unless you give away any obvious clues like talking about makeup or being cutesey.

Rule of the internet. "There is no females". For me personally if the name or something does not give an indication of it being female and coloured I assume white male. I have no idea why my mind jumps to that but that's my default. I am also not the only one who assumes this either. Since I have known people on who assume everyone is white unless told otherwise.

I think that's something that could happen to me, but I wouldn't care, since all genders are great.
