Is it normal that purring means "back off"?

My cat is fat, I mean reallly fat! He's huge. Like 60 lbs. Not normal for a cat... At least I don't think so. And whenever I pet anywhere near his stomach, he purrs. Then he claws and bites. We think he knows he's fat and he's self consious.
Is it normal???

My cat purrs when it's near me but doesn't like to be touched. Is it a male cat?

Put him on a diet, don't let him dredgers. And let him get exercise! The number of health issues his weight is causing is great...it's not fair to him. YOU are in control of his food, not him. Help him out!

  • Cats don't have the mental capacity to feel embarased about their weight. But many people get attacked by a purring cat because they fail to check for body language from the cat telling them they don't want to be touched anymore. If you see your cats tail twitching, it's a sign of annoyance. Also, your cat could have some kind of tumor or some other reason to feel pain in that area and could be lashing out for that reason. Take him to a vet for a check up to rule out any possible health problema

When a cat purrs it can mean its happy or unhappy, weird huh? Though I found with my cat he always rubs against us and purrs when hes happy, if hes not rubbing I stop patting him, you just need to work out your pets mannerisms.

  • It's normal. I currently have two cats and whilst one doesn't really mind having her tummy petted the other only tolerates it for so long before kicking and wiggling about with her claws out.

In general though cats purr for lots of reasons, some being to tell you they're happy, they're nervous or they even purr to comfort themselves if they are ill/hurt.

And generally most cats don't like their tummy area petted, although there are exceptions.

    So yes, totally normal.

Yes it is. The purring is probably a nervous purr. Alot of purr when they get nervous and alot cats will attack when they get nervous

  • Yup. My cat hates it if we play with her drooping fat. She is also very sensetive about her nose and will ignore us for a day if we talk about how cute her facial expressions are when she's pooping. Animals aren't stupid, I think they can understand us easily.
