Is it normal that religion sounds made up to me?

alright so for the past week iv been studying all different types of religions and i used to have just the average mentality of "maybe, maybe not." that most young people have. but... after researching all these different kinds... i kinda see where it contradicts itself and how made up the stories sound. like how Zeus turned into a swan and fucked a woman, for some reason that sounds just as ridiculous as a guy talking to a burning bush.

im not trying to convert people to atheism or just bashing religion, i mean i see all the good it can do for humanity, like making people want to improve themselves. thats great and all.

although i don't like the whole "holier than thou" attitude that some people get.

but im just saying from my perspective, religion kind of sounds made up to me... is that normal?

  • Religion is like the telephpne game. Its a story that kept getting told orally till it was written down. By that point, it sounds very different from the origional story.

  • A lot of religions, including Christianity, were made up to keep the masses under control by the powerful, wealthy rulers. Ignorant, uneducated people are VERY superstitious and easily believe whatever they are told. If they question it, they are ridiculed by their peers and told to have more blind *faith*. What a perfect tool for rulers.

Religion and mythology are synonymous. They should seem made up.

Religion is made up. It gives those who don't know what to do it most situations someone to follow. So it's not a bad thing.. I am not a religious person at all, I am very spiritual. Religion isn't bad until it meets another religion and makes a war. :( even with the morals it brings to people it also breeds hatred.

Look, religion was made to keep some type of order for humanity. Some Giant rulebook/guide. Different religions were created around the same one to have variety so people could pick. Or just so that the same one wouldn't get questioned so often. It's only the ways of life that are created with different intentions.

Normal! If you don't believe in santa or the Easter bunny or the tooth fairy, it's really hard to take someone turning water into wine, seriously, lol

    I think it's bullshit. I can't believe in such a ridiculous story.

If you read the Bible, turning water into wine was a conjuring trick and it didn't actually turn out to be water turned into wine. Jews in the Bible didn't perform miracles, it was all sleight of hand, it's logical!

Inventing foods is ideal for those with $15 or $40 who have nothing normal to make because they can't afford the ingredients, down in South Australia I'm a very poor man so I invent my foods because I can't afford the ingredients in a cookbook etc to make traditional food. Here's my favourite invention: peppery sauce of onions, barley flour and vegetables, eaten like a stew, and ideal to warm you up in winter.

I don't want to get into a religious argument online or anything, so I will say one thing: if you're right and there is no God, you lose nothing and I've got nothing to lose for having faith. But if you're wrong, you get to spend an eternity in hell while I'm partying with the creator of the universe on streets of gold. I'd rather accept God's proof (because there's tons) all around me and NOT take that chance. Best of luck, dude. You're in my prayers.

Turning water into wine isn't made up. A Jew had a natural ability to perform witchcraft, just because it doesn't fit into your box-like view of the universe, it doesn't make it the Gospel that this isn't true. Has anyone heard of the saying "my eyes are open"? Religion's trying to be open knowledge, it takes great courage to see the truth.

Religion has a point: it's not literally real, and of course it's made up, but for a good reason: to scare you into facing the consequences of your actions. Homer Simpson made up this god called Gamblord, I'm pretty sure he believes in it, but he's not an idiot to make up a beautiful thing with a moral against gambling: metaphorically speaking, he will steal away all your money if you waste your money on the pokies. That means if you gamble you're likely to lose your money. However they make things up to spread the awful truth to you like seas wash you on a ship, that people get eaten by sharks, that there are some weird creatures on the bottom of the sea. It's not about words or rules or stupidity, it's about fate, and realities beyond your understanding.

I think it's normal to think that way. Some stories seem far fetched. I am a Christian, but I agree I do not like the "holier than thou" attitude that some people can portray. I think any theory takes a little "faith", even Evolution. The theory that we spontaneously sprouted from....gum on a shoe without any proof of evolving species based on bones and fossils (i.e. half bird half lizard bones). Especially since spontaneous generation was disproved many years ago. But yes, you're thinking is totally normal.

Okay I understand were you are comng from I was once there. There are two things that stick in my head when I start to doubt. One the Paul (who wrote about the corinth church) is a great historin and many of his stories have been proven through archaeology. Second say it is not true, at least I have lived life morally up right and honest. If it is not true thoughs who did not fallow god go to hell. As for me I will not take that chance.

it is all made up by a smarter then your average person to keep stupid people in line and make them believe that if they behave badly they would be struck down by lightning.yes it does have it's good parts, but people still believing that story shows how we haven't evolved at all since those days.

Right! But what 'proof' is there for God? Rational thought can't detect a God. Hooviva shouldn't be so evil as to say that God doesn't exist. Jesus Christ wasn't a hero, but any belief in God should be a system of thought, logic, science, and scepticism to some degree. Better heaven is there for the dead people and us to realise that earth would be safer, God's suffering isn't to be found in the Bible, but a cause to help and care for the sick, starving and poor people, and religious wars are necessary, because the only people who win are rational people who think, who face reality and are not the fools of conventional religion. For one thing, non-luxurious food will keep you feeling cleansed, for another, invent and choose the food you want, or traditional foods if you have more money, and don't miss out on foods that you need most.

You, sir, are not alone. To me, religion is just complete nonsense. Live your life the way that makes you feel best.

We all need God. When mere humans decide that they are ok alone, without God, they become selfish and shallow.

I'm an athiest, and I think I am far from selfish and shallow. I have a strong passion for helping people, volunteer my time to help kids that I don't know through rough times every day, and am studying psychology in college so I will be able to do more to help people. I love doing it, and can't imagine doing anything else with my life. Some people, like myself, actually enjoy being good people and don't just do it because we believe that we are going to be punished if we don't...
