Is it normal that this dude lies so much to me?

So I have this classmate of mine who is super nice to me. We once spoke but we never got along because he would say: talk to you later, but never answer to my messages or contact me. Lately, I have started talking to him and it is fair to say that we are getting REALLY along. He is a lovely person, caring, delicate and very supportive. I think that he likes to show that he approves on my choice and on who I am, sort-to-say. He told me that he had never dated before, while this girl swore that she dated him last year and that he broke her heart. I believed him even though I also friends with the girl, and she does not look one who would lie. This afternoon, one of his closest friends, and my closest friends, told me that he told her that he DID date her, and then he explained why they broke up. I do not know why he would lie to me. Is it because he thinks I am a fool? Or is it because he likes me -probably not- and wants me to have a good impression of him? Or is it because he didn't feel like sharing, so he just lied? And now, what do I do? confront him or ignore him or fool him, too?

    It could be a one time thing or he might be a chronic liar. Do you really want to find out? Be careful, pay attention to what he says (does it make sense?), how he acts (attention seeker? One-upper?) and don't overlook things just because you like him. And if he is a liar don't think that you're special and he won't lie to you.

      I want to confront him, but then I will have to mention the name of the girl he opened up to. I tried to over look this, but I could not. It does not make sense for him to lie to me, AT ALL. He is not an attention seeker, I think he just lied to keep an impressive image, but that would be too much since he does not like me that way. He, two minutes ago, told me that he and his sorta-ex-but-not-really are back, and that he was super happy. I am giving up.

        That's sad. He may not have great understanding of himself or you if he is behaving that way. Sounds like he needs to mature a bit before you get in a relationship with him.
