Is it normal the french can't take defeat?

France lost their football game yesterday. THREE hours later, they were still bashing and cursing the team they lost to, wanting to start arguments and getting very aggressive. Now, I understand people don't like to lose and that it's humiliating, but don't these people have manners? Stop whining and take it like a champ.

Similar to England, except England bashes and curses their OWN team for days after losing :)

    (We just lost)

Well, Spanish team is really hard to lose to, because they mainly consist of whining, simulating, argueing-with-the-referee-assholes. Just look at Barca vs. Real; it's the way they play.

    And no, I'm not french.

The French can take a defeat, they've been taking it in every war.

na, they EXPERIENCE the defeats and after everybody else cleans up, declare themselves victors...there's a slight difference there between having something happen to you and accepting the truth about what happened.

    Thank You

This is pretty funny - people are assuming you're an American stereotype... because you're making national stereotypes.

Mind you, I don't agree with what you said. Obviously France is not a single entity of thought, and I can think of plenty of other instances of sports fans being bitter hours after losing a big championship game. So it's more like a few French assholes can't take defeat, which happens everywhere.

        • It was a bit predictable as well. Nobody tried to be rational and use their brain or even ask more questions about the situation.

Obviously, I have nothing against the French and this story wasn't all that serious. But I love how IIN takes it another way. I can assure you more than half of the people who read this thought I was stereotyping and decided to ignore it.

On another note, it was obvious that you weren't American solely because you said "football" instead of "soccer".

And last time I checked, american football isn't that big in France (At least I think. This is definitely the ignorant American in me talking).

Clearly, because Americans don't care enough about football to post this story.

I watched the game (I've seen all 27 games of Euro 2012 so far). I thought the French played a hugely intelligent way and can be proud of themselves against a team like Spain. They played the right way and, on another day, might have taken it to injury time.

The French have some very talented players and, that they played the way they did, can only be seen as a huge compliment to Spain. Like the Dutch team, though, their team spirit has been a bit lacking and it's occasionally bubbled over into the media.

Italy versus England tonight for the last semi-final spot. I feel England are going to be forced into the same game as the French. Whether we win ugly or lose ugly, though, I hope we're gracious about it. Although obviously I hope we win. I've never seen my national team in the final of a major competition. And with Italy, then Germany, impeding our way, I don't think this is our year.

You thought the French played well against Spain?

Nope, just intelligently. If they'd have taken on the Spanish for 90 minutes, statistically the Spanish would have blown them away. But by making the game a non-event for 65 or 70 minutes, they gave themselves more of a chance (smaller sample size equals great number of spurious results).

I've seen plenty of teams score early and try to sit on a one goal lead but I don't think I've seen many teams do it the other way around. It was one of the few tactics that would significantly increase their chances. Not enough to actually win the game, of course, but enough to have had better odds of winning it. I was impressed with the idea, even if it led to a pretty dire game.

But it's only half a tactic. If they had pushed back in the last quarter (after they finally put in Nasri, and Ribery got to change his fucking shirt), they'd have a small chance of salvaging themselves. Also a chance of getting destroyed, but there's not much difference between 1-0 and 5-0 in an elimination game. Instead Ribery looked like the only one who was accomplishing much, and Xabi Alonso continued to cause spontaneous orgasms across the globe.

I can't read Laurent Blanc's mind but I'm guessing the timing of Nasri's appearance may have even been determined pre-game. But yes, when it came to be time for France to press, they didn't look good. The tactic was there, the performance wasn't.

I'd say there's a huge difference between 1-0 and 5-0. If you have ten minutes of the game left and are chasing a single goal to restore parity, you'll go for it (or should). But three, four or five goals down, that's different.

I'm talking about if it's the last fifteen minutes in the game and you're a point down. I'd put everything into a stellar offense at the hope of equalizing - if you fail, then you're no worse off than if you were being defensive. If you succeed, you can get back to defending the tie. But then again, what do I know?

              Anyway, place your bets, dapplepie.
