Is it normal the site deletes replied comments?

I notice if people reply to comments and one of the people deletes their own comment it deletes everything. Why does the site do this? It does not always do it but it does a good amount of the time. If you reply and remove your reply it deletes. If the person you reply to removes the comment it deletes everything too.

    I suppose its because when the next reader comes along, if they see a bunch of replies to a non existent message the whole thing is taken out of context.
    Imagine if the replies are to an argument two people are having, and one person removes their side of it. You'd come to a post and just see the comments of a guy getting more and more exasperated seemingly with himself, without an antagonist being present.
