Is it normal to always listen music while reading?

Well I always thought it was normal but when I read a book while people see my earphones they say "How can you read like that? I can't focuse on both things!" Well I consantly use my earphones since I wake up until I go to sleep with only break for shower so I'm used to it but I don't see any problem with reading like that.

I don't understand why anybody would find this unusual. I used to wear headphones no matter what I was doing. Consistent background noise helps me concentrate.

  • I like to listen to music while I read to control my thoughts. If I didn't I'd be thinking about a million things instead of just two or three. I'll put a single song on repeat for a while or listen to that album for background consistency.

Yeah reading and music are brilliant, so why not do them together

I would say that's not very abnormal at all. I used to read books on the bus. The people on that bus were very loud people too. You learn to drown out the background noise if you practice enough.

It's not normal for me. I can't focus on music and literature. I get wrapped up in both easily so I end up having to back track and re-read parts I didn't retain. (Because I was listening to the music.) Soooo, apparently normal for a lot of people.. But not all of us. :)

It's normal, but I'm like those other people; I can't focus on both things completely.

    It's perfectly fine.

I even have a playlist specifically for studying. It's comprised of songs I like... but can ignore as "background noise" when I want to use it to drown out other distractions.

It depends on where I am.

If I am anywhere but my own home then the headphones are necessary both to concentrate (eventually the noise will fade into the background but chattering doesn't so easily) or to ensure that people don't bother me (my friends are really obnoxious and like to look over my book or chat me up so the headphones usually keep them at bay... well... not usually but enough).

I can't do it. I played music for a big part of my life, so I just can't have music as a "background".

Besides, books often, have their own "sountrack". The athmosphere you don't wanna spoil.

  • Normal enough. I usually listen to music when I'm playing around on my notebook.
