Is it normal to always zone out?

I get this thing where nearly all the time, I zone out from what's going on around me, whether its people talking to me or when i'm watching TV. I manage to focus on it for a bit, then soon after, I zoom out when i'm not realising it and start to think about something else in some sort of thought train, like my mind is somewhere else. Then after a few minutes, I zoom back in and wander what's going on. Well, obviously I know where I am and that it's just I forgot what was happening. This happens all the time and usually I have to rewind the TV or ask whoever is speaking to me to repeat what they said. It's starting to bother me now and affect my life. Is this normal!??

How old are you? The reason I am asking is because I had the same problem when I was younger. It was practically impossible for me to read a single page from a book. But it suddenly stopped shortly after I turned 21.

Your pre-frontal cortex is what gives you control over your thought process and emotions. But it takes a long time for it to fully develop. It can take up to 24 years from birth. That is why children and teenagers may seem rash and lacking will power and they grow to become responsible adults.

I am sure in this day and age I would have been diagnosed with ADD or ADHD but thank god I wasn't because I didn't want my brain to be messed up. After 21 the problem solved itself and I was surprised at my own level of concentration.

If you're older than 24, then you actually may be suffering from ADD or ADHD and it might be helpful to seek professional help. But if you're younger, there is a high chance it will go away once your pre-frontal cortex develops fully.

I'm not over 20, i'm 16 infact, and you could be right, it could just be development but even so, it still doesn't seem right. As far as I can see, others my own age don't have this problem but I might be wrong. with me there's a difference on the outside because you can tell i'm not focusing, whereas with others, they look like they are, so that's why I think my problem is outstanding. Hopefully I will grow out of it like you have, perhaps as I grow up and enter a job where I need to focus myself all the time, my brain will be trained into being that way all the time.

I understand it is hard. Same thing used to happen to me. My brother and I used to study in the same room. Our tables were beside each other's. One day I remember I was looking up the TOC of a book so I can open up the chapter I want to read. But I zoned out and my brother made fun of me saying "Are you memorizing the page numbers"? He never had this problem even though he shares like half of my genes.

If you take those drugs at such a young age, it may alleviate the problem temporarily but at the same time it can have seriously detrimental effect on your brain development. So please be very careful what you decide to do.

I hope things work out okay for you. Good luck! I am sorry I am not able to be of more help but this is something you will have to endure. We all have our crosses to bear.

I don't know if it's normal or not but I get the same way. I can't sit through a movie or get into a tv series because I lose interest easily. I can't hear things going on around me if I get in my zone. I could be looking right at someone and not hear a word they say. I didn't used to be like that though, it's a more recent development.

    Caffeine may help you focus.

Yeah it does. I heard that if you have ADHD, stimulants (including caffeine) make you focus more than it would on someone without ADHD

I wish I could but I'm afraid it will ruin my job application (especially if it's to be a pilot) :/

You're going to ruin much more than a job application if you become a pilot - like a planeload of people, including yourself! I hope you don't drive a car?

I know i've thought about that believe me, but hopefully it won't be too bad, and i'll get assessed anyway during training and if im too bad (distracted etc) then they simply won't accept me in
