Is it normal to be a christian and dislike afterlife?

I'm a Christian (practicing, going to church, regular bible study etc.) and I despise the concept of an afterlife. Living for an eternity sounds so tiring. I almost wish that the atheists were right (maybe they are, I hope so), and when we die, that's it. Honestly? I don't want to "live forever" bleh, sounds so exhausting.

Life after death can very possibly exsist and i can see how you could find living for eternity boring but heaven is paradise and we might not even feel boredom...

Wait so you just want it to end like this? This can't be it. The whole basis of christianity is formed around heaven every religion has some sort of afterlife. And besides don't you want to meet god one of days?

I agree w/ zchristian. Heaven is perceived to be a beautiful place, I wouldn't mind living forever up there.

I NEVER post anonymously. If someone doesn't like my view or who I am, I'm better off not associating with people like that. And anyway there's nothing wrong with the view, it's interesting

Awesome! Anyway, if you studied Christianity and Hinduisma and don't like the afterlife, Buddhism's the next logical step. Ending the cycle.

              I've studied all 3.
I don't know why I never considered the ending of the cycle though. Probably because I am still afraid of the afterlife concept.

If your Church hasn't sold you on the concept of an afterlife, you are more of an unbeliever than a believer, surely?

    • I disagree. Being wary of what will happen can only be done if I truly believe it will happened. Hence why atheists don't give a damn.

I know its all glory and bliss and shit but living forever... I'm tired as hell just thinking of it.

        Your spirit is tired.
Why not talk it over with your priest or minister or whatever?
You can't be the first person to have felt this way.
I know what you mean about not having the energy for another life after this one - me too!

I know what they would say
"It's all because you're physical body is tired, give yourself a break, have faith, blah blah"

They don't understand that no matter what, I feel as if I have heard it all before. I feel tired but not just in a physical sense. Don't get me wrong, I don't have depression, I enjoy life but I feel tired in a sense that I've done this all before and I just don't believe that I will have the same youth and vigor I do now in my next life, especially considering the curve balls I get thrown. The bat will have to splinter one day, y'know?

You have to fully understand what an afterlife is like in order to appreciate it. If you are a christian, that means you may go to heaven. Culture has made it seem like you will be floating on a cloud playing a harp. It's vastly greater than what we can ever imagine. No hunger, yet you can eat all the food you have enjoyed. You will never get tired, sick, sad. You can play the sports you have enjoyed. You can talk to your great great great grandma about her life on earth, or many of your relatives you never knew. You can visit the many planets in the universe and explore God's creation. The possibilities are endless. You will never run out of things to do.

i am in the same boat friend. i have been raised in a christian family and only recently stopped going to church. i am 20 this year. i dwell on deep thought and realize i have never felt, seen or heard god. maybe i am brainwashed? try telling a Muslim that what they believe is wrong.
but i hate the concept of serving god for eternity!
i love music its my life and i bet they wont have music about earthly struggles up there.
if there was nothing afterwords that would be bliss.
like it was before we were born there was nothing and the same when dead. this is just a mere movie that we are all actors in.
but then think what if there was nothing before birth and after death what is the point of life in between?
why is there life in the first place and what binds me to this body?
its all a mind F***!!! i just don't concern myself

you are very odd... most christians wether they believe it or not are only religious because they are too weak minded or scared to believe there is nothing after death. OR they are just religious because they fear god. personally i would never worship someone who would damn people to hell, but hey, i have a brain.

    • I have my own reasons for believing it. I have an education and I have lived in many different places, tried and studied a few different religions and had time with people of many different cultures and Christianity (in it's purer forms) made a lot more sense to me, in combination with my knowledge of religious aspects of other religions (studying Christianity and Hinduism together strangely made a lot more sense then just studying Christianity, it's probably a cultural thing).

I don't know if you are trying to insinuate that I don't have a brain but uhh... Yeah, I value religion very much and it is very fulfilling. It's not everyone's cup of tea, though.

Heaven and hell are analogies for mind states. Heaven is lving in complete contentment and happiness and is achieved though a complete lack of self dislike, which can be achieved by being good to others and so being able to share in their happiness. Hell is a state of complete loathing born out of selfishness. Jesus' whole message makes much more sense once this is accepted.

    • I know, but the concept of an afterlife to begin with bothers me. It just seems like so much effort to put into living if you don't have to.

Don't worry about it, live while your alive and accept that you don't know what happens next.

        • I know, and that kind of sucks. I'd prefer to just not have to worry about anything once I die, this whole salvation thing really gets under my skin sometimes. It's not enough to be a good person, nooo, you need to do more, more more! Really? Come on. It's one thing to hold yourself to a high standard, but some people get really down on themselves when they don't live up to it, because it always overshadows the (btw humans make mistakes) point that the bible is trying to make. Oi.

If you like the concept of atheism more than christianity, what's stopping you from simply changing beliefs?

    • Liking and believing are two different things. I believe the holocaust did occur, but I don't like it. Doesn't mean that I am going to switch to believing that it didn't happen.

We have proof of the holocaust.
Your Christian beliefs are based on faith.

        • Whether or not an issue is fact does not guarantee belief. If just guarantees that you'll look like a bigger fool for not believing in it.

            True that.
There are neo-Nazis in Germany right now who deny the Holocaust.

I respect that. I know a lot of people, who, when they're wrong, even if they know they're wrong, will just keep pushing their point to avoid looking like they got it wrong.
