Is it normal to be a 'jack of all trades' but a master at none?

I have an interest and general knowledge of most subjects and a lot of passions in completely different fields. I find the idea of picking 1 college major repulsive. I feel bad though because I don't have that 1 thing that I'm a master at, im just good at alot of things. IIN?

I am the same way but I refuse to be good at science. I hate it in almost every aspect.

You sound like me. I'm a generalist. I know enough about most things to pass muster. I could take a job in pretty much anything and do it fairly well, but I'd be behind the person who specialised in that area alone. It's a bit of a curse. It's rare to find someone who would employ someone like me. I know something about everything, rather than everything about something.

I couldn't have put it better! SOmetimes I think it may be attributed to ADD.

I hear you. I mean, I am better at some things than other things but I never stuck to any one sport for example to the point where I was olympic material.
Question: how good do you have to be at something that would classify 'Master' status? Also, this may depend on your outlook: do you have a high opinion of yourself, or are you modest?
I have a feeling that your modest and you are in fact good at something - you just have to think about it.
    Maybe ask your family?

I think it's totally normal. Ok yeah, it'd be great to master something but it's good to have lots of different interests and skills.

Jack of all trades and master of none is a little pathetic.

Be a renaissance man or a triple threat. I think you can do it!

I'm also a jack of all trades!! I told myself that I needed to choose a straight up career that paid well and also one that was the closest to my interests.

It is tough, I feel the same often. I would choose a degree like business. It is so general that if you decide to go into the private sector it a great degree and in the public sector its not bad. I would be careful getting too specific because if your mind is like mine it rebels against boring minutia of things I am currently interested in. Good luck.

Do something like History..it is not likely to change much!!! At least it shows future employers that you are CAPABLE of learning if you have some sort of degree. You can persue all your other interests at a later date. I have not used my academic qualifications in many of my careers..but l have been able to show that l am able to progress.

Choose whatever you get the best results in.
BTW to be a 'master' tradesman or sailor etc you have to be over 50 years old :o)

  • I think the days of having a single career for your entire adult life is a thing of the past.

You should try to master at least one skill though. Not being able to choose a major in college just means that you don't know yourself well enough to make a decision - it's sort of flaky.
