Is it normal to be afraid of human contact

I realized I am afraid of physical contact. I don't like hand shakes and hugs are awkward.

I have even lost interest in sex and playing with a woman's goods. When I see couples doing a public display of affection (PDA) it sometimes grosses me out.

I don't like sports that involve having to grab other men, such as wrestling or foot ball. I have been doing some martial arts recently, which sometimes involves grabbing, but I am able to suck it up since I think I need to practice self defense.

  • My brother dislikes hugs and isn't fond of people much. He's not autistic but he does have bi-polar depression.

Hmmmm, I don't think anyone here can answer this correctly, I suggest you see a professional who can diagnose you properly, because all I can say is that it isn't completely normal.

Not a mental illness in my opinion. I'm thinking it is simply an irrational fear that you may get over. If not, its no big.deal. you are who you are. Just let it shine.

I was like that when i was younger. i even kicked a teacher in kindergarten when she gave me a hug.

I have mostly gotten over it, but I'm still a little uncomfortable with hugs.

Well, some of the suggestions above do raise good points, but could it be that you're experiencing Aphenphosmphobia (the fear of being touched)? If so, you might want to pursue and examination and treatment by medical/psychological practitioners to address this condition if it's the problem.

Your question seemed to hint, though, that there may be concerns about cleanliness and disease? Hypochondriasis (fear of disease/illness/pathogens) can also be treated with therapy and other approaches.

In any case, it might be worth your while to contact a psychological practitioner to determine if any of these conditions (including what the other commentators suggested) might be the problem. At least then you'd know if that was the problem and then you could decide what to do and how to resolve it.

It sounds like you're probably asexual. The human contact part just sounds like a behavior, not a mental illness. I'd say you're normal.
