Is it normal to be afraid of pool draines?

Okay okay. Irrational? Yes. Freaking scary? Definitely. Now I've had this fear since I was about 7 (old enough to actually process the fact that it was a fear). I would go to Florida every summer to visit my grandparents and almost everyday we would go to their community pool. The pool draines started in the 4 foot deep area and every time I went underwater I would never take my eyes off of it. I would never ever ever ever walk past it. Everyone would ask why is would never jump into the pool off the side and I just said I don't know but in reality I WAS NOT RISKING BEING IN A 5 FOOT PERIMETER WITH THAT POOL DEVIL. Once I was in my friends pool and I swam to one side of the pool not knowing there was a pool light on the side and found myself RIGHT NEXT TO IT. Is it normal?

Your fear is understandable, but you wouldn't get sucked down the drain in a pool, they're too small. I do have qualms about going into the ocean due to sharks and jellyfish.

We've inherited a lot of visceral fears from our ancient ancestors who lived in a world full of creatures which would like to have them for dinner. Fear of _things_ lurking under water seems pretty natural to me.

I've always refused to walk barefoot into a lake of any sort. Ocean beaches are fine, but the idea of stepping into murky water and putting my foot down on who-knows-what makes my skin crawl.

In fact, I've never been very comfortable around deep water and I've always been slightly wary of pool drains, but that's more a practical thing. I wonder what's to stop some asshole joker from opening the valve and trapping some poor sucker who happens to swim near enough to get caught in the outflow.

I've always been afraid of going into the ocean while at the beach due to jellyfish, I saw one once when I was 7 while at the beach in Wildwood, New Jersey, and it freaked me out.

I think jellyfish are kinda cool to look at, but you don't want to mess around with them since they all can sting. The sting of some species isn't anything to worry about, but some are highly toxic and even life-threatening.

I live in Britain, and most people assume that the cold water of the North Atlantic doesn't harbouring much in the way of venomous creatures, but there have been shoals of Portuguese Man o' War sighted here recently, and those can seriously ruin your day. We also have Weever Fish, which have a habit of hiding in the loose sand just where the surf is breaking. They have defensive spines on their back which are tipped with a toxin. People have compared the pain of stepping on one of those to having your foot held in a fire.

      Oh, fuck.

"Transrectal evisceration" - in lay terms, having your lower bowel sucked out through your asshole.

My butt automatically clenched when I read the opening sentences of that article.

      Jesus Christ :/

I remember as a kid during swimming lessons, we'd all have a blast sticking hands over those intakes. Guess we were lucky no one sat on one or put their faces near em. Fuck.

Unless I'm thinking of something different. The first story on the first link freaked me out enough that I can't bring myself to try the youtube link.

Edit: ok after google, maybe ours are different? We had suction tubes on the walls, they were like....2 or less inches in diameter?

I remember hearing of this kind of stuff happening here in the states (kids getting stuck and drowning, & disemboweled). But haven't heard anything about it in a while.

The video is a story from a news program. Nothing too visually graphic.
