Yeah, completely normal. Social networking is (in terms of human history) a completely new way of communicating. Apart from weddings, there was no time in the past where you get everyone you've ever met in the same room and make a pronouncement. And, at weddings, you have a set template. It's not like you'd stand up at a wedding and say:

"dappled likes rabbits; those hairy, Japanese bastards"

I'd be amazed if as many as 10% of people get the reference. Those are the 10% it's aimed it. For the 90% who don't, I could quite understand someone jumping to the wrong conclusion.

That's why Facebook is a bit backwards. It assumes everything we say will be of interest to everyone we know. It misses the point that what I say (in public) is tailored to my audience.

i find it inappropriate to post any kind of status. they are just cries for attention. if you have something to say, just tell your friends, seriously whats with people posting everything for everyone to see

I wish more people WOULD be afraid to post personal things on Facebook because I honestly get tired of reading statuses on my news feed where girls are talking about how they need to buy a bigger bra size, how somebody's boy/girlfriend is such a piece of crap, etc.

I think it's normal, but I don't usually post personal stuff myself. I usually just put jokes or funny pictures. If you don't feel comfortable posting something, it's fine. a lot of people would never post anything personal.

That's why so many people vague book. As in "now you're just somebody that I use to know :(" or something that indicates your sad but want people to pester you about it all. I'm not a fan of facebook.

It's normal. I don't have a Facebook, but I often find myself reluctant to comment on my life. I suppose what you could do is put in privacy settings on your profile. Dictate who gets to see what Or you could do a "Vague Status" which I sometimes find myself doing. Don't mention names, sound mysterious about it. Example: "I used to love you, but now I don't. You turned out not to be who I originally thought you were..."
