Is it normal to be afraid of the dark?

I can be lying in bed at night and suddenly start freaking out because the dark is too much for me. Not knowing and seeig freaks me out.
(Mind you, I'm a teenage girl)
One time I was walking down my hallway and it was dark and as when I reached to turn on the switch, my hand missed it. Blindly I looked for it for a sec. But while I began I panic and I was breathing really loud and heavily.
I don't understand why I spa out when I think too much about it.
Any reasons?

I sail my 38 foot sail boat across the oceans and yes I get scared at times at night. Don't leave the dark you will out grow it at some point but try to have a radio and a flash light on it will help and think of good times. I learned that darkness cannot harm you

  • Being afraid of the dark is quite common. Panic when our senses are even momentarily deprived is also normal. Focus on breathing and self talk to keep calm when this happens, and use logic. Depending where you are, you can tell yourself you're not in immediate danger. If you are going to be somewhere that you are unsure of when it is dark, get a buddy to go with you to help you feel secure. :) Hope this helps .

It is actually genetic to feel afraid of the dark. Thousands of years ago, people were wired to be afraid of the dark because of what kind of predators might be lurking.

i felt like that too until i came to accept anything bad that could happen and consider the possibility of it
it's probably just your bad thoughts building up until there are so many you start to panic... thats what happens to me, just negate each of them before it gets to that point
