Is it normal to be afraid of the ocean?

I'm terrified of the ocean. The feeling of not knowing what's under me or around me just freaks me out. I have a phobia of sharks; I get scared just looking at pictures of them. When I was little and we'd go to the beach, I would always be so scared because my parents would go out in the water so far and I'd be afraid something would happen. Is this normal to be so afraid?

So Ktulu and Leviathan cannot attack you. Of course, you will have to deal with evil creatures on land.

    GOD I HATE THE OCEAN.
And what makes this even WORSE: I live in Hawaii...which means I'm surrounded by water and everyone else who loves it.
I'm not afraid of sharks or deep water or the unknown of it...don't laugh - I'm afraid of the rocks and being pulled out to a rock. I'm so terrified of the ocean, I can't even dip my feet in. I have anxiety attacks and start shaking, crying, and hyperventilating. My boyfriend says I need to stop being such a baby and just get over my irrational fears already. Definitely easier said than done. I tried, I got my feet in the water, but once it got past my ankles, I started freaking out and I had to go back to my towel. :'(

It's called thalassophobia. It's just ridiculous!

But good luck to you if you're trying to get over your fear. Just know that people die more times a year by falling coconuts than shark attacks! :) That and sharks aren't really that bad. Just gauge their eyes out, you'll be fine.

Im getting chills just thinking and writing about this, but im absolutely terrified of gigantic ocean waves, and the monstrous magnitude of the deepness of the ocean

When we'd go to the ocean to swim, I would always waddle in the shallow water right next to the toddlers with their little life saving floaties, I would feel safe next to them. But one day a friend somehow convinced me (i think he called me a chicken or something) to go into the deep water with him. I took my floatie with me, and i was floating on the deep water for a while, but that thing(it was a dolphin) somehow flipped and flung into the air a couple of feet away deeper into the ocean. I panicked. I immediately began to furiously kick my legs and arms and hold my neck and chin up. It felt like quicksand pulling me down. It was terrifying. My friend was yelling at me to go get the floatie but no way that was a death sentence. I ended up on his back as he carried me back to the shore

I saw how fast the floatie went into the deep, its like the ocean was alive and pulling it deeper, and I saw it get smaller and smaller as it went further out. That was traumatizing.

Me too, I love the ocean, however I'm so scared of sharks and unknown things in the water that I won't go in past my knees

I'm afraid if what's in it too. did you know there's enough plastic in some part of the pacific ocean or maybe Atlantic that it could all fit inside of the state of Texas? or maybe it's just trash in general or Rhode Island but it's something like that. it's scary to think of how much shit we've dumped into it :-(

  • Me too! Except the shark thing. All the unknown things on the ocean floor is what I hate. I jump at every little thing that touches my foot.

  • Same here, when I was a kid the water levels in Super Mario 64 scared the hell out of me (especially the black hole and the eel).

I love the ocean, but I'm also a bit scared of it. I think it's mainly the fact that we can't see what's around us. I don't swim out into deeper water and even where I can touch the ground, I tend to tiptoe, not wanting to step on a jellyfish or sea urchin. Worrying about being attacked by a shark is quite an irrational fear, though. Statistically it's less likely than having a traffic accident.
