Is it normal to be afraid to swim in the ocean or lakes?

Ever since I could remember ive always been terrrified to go swimming in a lake or in the sea, I guess im just paranoid that ill be sucked in to the sea or drift and become stranded in the middle of the ocean lol.

Is it normal?

  • Just don't think about all those sharks, jellyfish, and swimming knives lurking ominously beneath the waves.

Don't think about how deep the water is or about what's watching you from below.

    • A guy peed in the ocean or a lake and some sort of snake like fish went right up his penis and it would just eat everything on it's way. Must of been a fun experience!

I'm really surprised you didn't add any sort of fish eating you alive OP.

Learn to scuba dive and see how magic it is underwater.
when you know what is in there, and you are a confident swimmer, you will lose your fear. Make sure you have someone with you to enjoy the whole experience...it is much more fun to overcome a fear than it is to live with one.
I feel so sorry for people who are afraid of the sea...it is so wonderful ...and yet always needs to be respected.

  • I felt that way after hearing that sharks can swim in water that's something like 3 feet deep. I haven't been swimming in the ocean since. Lakes are ok, though. There's just a bunch of dumb fish in there mating and farting and doing their fish-thing. Nothing to worry about

My brother in law is like this. And I feel kinda bad for him at times because my family has always been going to oceans and lakes our entire lives, so they sometimes get on his case about it. My sister says she thinks he has a fish fright, because one time they went scuba diving and supposedly a fish swam in his direction and he got creeped out.

He's much better in water where he can see the bottom. We went to the Bahamas once, and he was fine there.

At least your fear is a reasonable one...more so than some of the others I read lol. My indonesian friend doesn't go to the beach much, since there was the tsunami in Asia.
