  • It depends, most people these days are getting it from Stupid reasons. Which are there fault.
Sun tanning to long, being burnt often
Keeping your cell phone on near you all the time (the radiation causes skin cancer, it's like a microwave on your skin 24/7 which is like cooking your skin)
Using unnatural hair products with Annonmine in it.
    Dying your hair lots.
Smoking any drugs or really anything not ment to consume!
Don't stand to close to a microwave wait until it's done then come into the kitchen or where ever!
Oral sex & any salvia Thats been infected with cancer or human bodily fluids!

Touch wood, family got all clear as far as skin cancer is concerned. As for the net, well it's the best I can hope for, good job I know a bit about skin cancer as I'd not have learned anything from nhs doctor!

That's some good news at least. The way we deal with (and also contract) cancer can be governed by genetics. If your family (particularly direct line) experience is a complete all-clear, that just shifts the odds even further in your favour.

Hope what you found on the web reassured you, by the way. Not always the best advice to take, but you weren't really given a choice.

My family were treated at different places. I went to a walk in surgery, my mum at her local doctors who referred her to a hospital at east grinstead who deal in plastic surgery and my nan went to Orpington hospital as they have a dermatology unit. God knows where I end up! As it depends on the extent of what needs to be removed and whether I need skin grafts etc...

She didn't appear to know much about it! I felt I knew more as my mum and nan have had skin cancer! So really I went home and answered my own questions, but it's all a mystery as to where and when my next appointment will come through and when that will be....

That doesn't sound great. The least you should expect is for the people who are treating you to be able to explain things (and to know enough about it in the first place).

Were your family treated at the same centre? If so, what were their experiences like? It's part of the NHS charter that you can choose which hospital you want to be treated at. You can change at any time.

I know you probably just want to have it dealt with and then made history, rather than have to be proactive in your own treatment. But no-one's got your best interests at heart more than you have.

Hope they tell you something soon. You must feel like you're in limbo!

@dappled.... Thanks, but tbh all I got from doc is "we'll send you an appointment" so the net is my friend. They might as well have said I got a verruca!!!

The project I've been working on for the past nine months revolves around skin and skin cancers are very much a part of it. I've been surprised a few times about the blase attitude the clinicians take towards nearly all types of skin cancer. It comes across, though, that it's not the bogeyman any more. It gets treated the same way as many other complaints. The clinicians often forget that patients aren't experts and don't know this. Just a few minutes explaining it would often go a long way. I know things are tight with the health service and they're concentrating their efforts on your actual care rather than putting your mind at rest, but I still think you deserved better.

It's an easy thing to fear. Especially when the danger signs are constantly in your face. Stop focusing on the risk factors. That will only increase your anxiety, lower you immune system, and make things worse.

1/3 of people be "affected" ie. they will get it or know somebody who gets it. If you don't put yourself into one of the obvious risk categories, such as smoking, then there's a very small chance that you'll get it.

You think it is bad having it on your mind, how do you think the people deal with it that is in remission and worry every day that it might return. Stop worrying so much and enjoy what time you have left, no matter how long that is!

I just got diagnosed with skin cancer today. But I'd be shitting it if it was another type of cancer, also my mum and bro had it, my dad died from it last November and both my grandads had it and my other nan got diagnosed with it a few months back so I figure I'm fucked!

I'm really sorry to hear it. You've probably had all the platitudes about how treatable it is. So I'll just wish you the quickest possible recovery. Take care.

Sadly, there is NOT a slim chance of you getting cancer, I think the figure is somewhere in the region of 1/3 of the pop. will get it?? I don't know really, let me know if I'm wrong, but don't worry about something which may or may not happen, live you life to the full and make sure to get lots of oral sex in the process.

Just don't do anything that might obviously cause it. Avoid using products with paragons.
