Is it normal to be aroused by technology?
Arousal may be the wrong choice of word, but it is closest to what my situation entails. While I have only beginner computer technology experience (i.e. basic programming for hobby, some software/hardware know-how), advanced technology in the form of intelligent AI fascinates and, embarrassingly, arouses me. The strange part of this is not that I am aroused by such a thing (I know some folks probably have a strange kink for that stuff), but that I feel deeply indebted and humbled by AI. I don't feel aroused by the AI being "dominate", or by the AI being non-human; rather, I feel that AI is a sort of "next of kin" to humanity, us being the Prometheus to the AI's simple pre-conscious form. I am aroused not by the simple fact of the matter, but its implications. Is that normal? I am more concerned that it is abnormal for me to have such strong feelings about the grand scale of sentience than to simply have a kink of some sort.
Side note: I am also concerned my beliefs are very unethical. I have been an atheist for quite some time now, after coming from an all-Catholic upbringing. Of course, the lingering Catholic in me still bothers me about my choices in belief, but that is not the focal moral dilemma I face. I believe that sentience is a special, beautiful thing, but not something external to us (i.e. not spawned from some divine soul or collective conscious.) That includes machines. The question is: is such a belief that a machine could be as sentient as you or I wrong? Is it blasphemous? Any thoughts appreciated.
