Is it normal to be ashamed of my country because of this?

Australia has started culling sharks in the name of tourism. It is cruel, unnecesary and makes Australia look like some backward retard country.

So is it normal for me to feel shame for my country over this?

Absolutely! I am big on saving our environment and I believe now, more than ever, it is time for humans to step it up. We now have broached the 7 billion person count on this Earth and it is our duty to protect and preserve the environment.

With that being said, I'm very surprised Australia would allow such things. Very sad indeed. I hope these politicians that have influence over this, will do the right thing. What a shame it is- to have a leading First World country have such a stain on their sleeves.

Yes, it's normal. Perhaps, you should write a letter to GreenPeace or to your government's ecological department, that is if you have one. I'm sure that there are others like you who against this.

Yeah, I was going to add that I think most people actually are against it. Yet it's....happening anyway..

So to op: ashamed of fellow Australians? Maybe not.
      Ashamed of certain politicians? Yes.

    Yes more sharks I say.
Oh wait the statistics are low, but if I ever found myself lost at sea on a raft I'd wish them all dead.

Why do you want to keep them alive anyway?
    Trying to save the species?
Try endangered species there are a lot of them, sharks are doing fine ;)

Im a south African and in the 300 hundred years since Europeans have come to the connent , its been practically emptied of game, wether its hunters from England in the 20's who would shoot mountians of sprinkbok in a single afternoon to elephants in places like Angola or Mozambique losing their feet and dying because of landmines, yeah it can be embarresing and shamefull

No speading half truths to try and create controversy and getting others onside to make oneself feel important is not normal.

I am also from Australia. We have very strict (to the point of restrictive) conservation and protection laws for marine flaura and fauna.

The article actually says that culling a shark because it has killed a human will have an ADVERSE affect on tourism. There is plenty I am ashamed about to be an Aussie, but in this area I would say we are actually leading the way.

If it has an adverse effect on tourism why are we doing it?
