Is it normal to be drilled with no novocaine

My dad set up a dentist appointment for me with a friend of his an old dentist I have not been to a dentist in awhile. We went when I got out of work yesterday. I have had no problems with my teeth. We were the only ones there and he walked us to this back room and had me sit in the chair. He starting checking around and told my dad I have two cavities, which I do not think I did. He put this mouth spreader in my mouth to open it wide and then just started drilling with giving me nothing. It did hurt a little but not as bad as I thought it would. Had two teeth drilled and filled and no pain after he was done. He wants me back today again said there is a bad tooth in the back which may have to come out, I hope if he pulls it he will give me something this time.

    Well I did go back and the dentist did pull the tooth out without giving me anything, it did hurt or a minute but once he was done the hurt seem to go away. I still think he really did not have to pull the tooth out. I will go back today just for a follow up.

    yeah my dentist never even mentioned pain killers he just said i had vampire fangs and drilled off like 50 percent of the teeth it hurt so bad

    My dentist never uses any kind of pain killers, he prefers it that way and doesn't charge it on the bill. So it depends on the dentist, some prefer without so they can see your expressions so they know how deep and where to drill without looking. With anesthetics you can't do that.

    No it's not normal unless it's like a 2 second drill... it means the dentist is cheap. Another dentist told me that, because I had a dentist as a kid who didn't use Novocaine and I told my current dentist about that and he said it meant he was cheap and I believe it!
