Is it normal to be embarrassed about financial assistance/scholarships

The title pretty much says it all. My mother wants me to get one, it wouldn't be for talent or anything like that. Someone would just paying for me to go because we can't afford it. It bothers me because most people I know have enough money to go.

It is nothing to be embarrassed about. And sadly normal to have school debt. Debt is a serious commitment and I don't believe most people can go without some sort of financial assistance, merit based or need based. I guess that would depend a lot on your school of choice. But if you're going to go into debt, make it worth it.

Ah I see what you mean here, given experience. My family isn't exactly the richest on this planet, so the use of scholarships and federal grants really helped me.

Just think, the people that have all the money, usually are snooty and stuck up. Your tireless work ethic and government funded money will propel you into a prosperous future!

It's actually kind of a good thing. Unless your classmates come from enough money to pay for college in full (unlikely), they'll be saddled with student loans that will take them years to pay off. You're getting the same educational opportunity without that burden. That's nothing to be ashamed of. If it's a matter of "deserving" in your mind, your more well-to-do classmates weren't any more deserving than you of having an easier life due to their parent's money.

  • Don't be. Few if any ever make it through life not having others there to help them.

Don't be embarassed! I (along with most of my friends) get financial aid/grants for the same reason. Unfortunately many people cannot afford the high (& increasing) costs of school. You should absolutely utilize these resources if you need them. If anyone judges you, then they're not worth your time anyway.

Most people are too poor to get to college. Everyone gets money even the really smart kids are getting paid free money to pursue it.
