Is it normal to be embarrassed to speak with a french accent?

I'm a French male living in the states, (New York at the moment) and despite the diversity here, I still feel self conscious at times when speaking English because of my accent. While it is not an overly thick French accent, it is still there, and sometimes I feel that people will mock me because of it. :( Is it normal to feel this way?

I'm about to move overseas, so I sympathize. I'm not ashamed of my accent, but I also don't like the idea of getting unwanted attention when I'm going about my daily activities, like grocery shopping and whatnot. I don't particularly like to be singled out.

Having said that, I'm sure it's one of those things that you give more credence to than strangers...I'm sure you wouldn't pay too much attention to hearing a foreign accent in your own country. People may notice, but it's probably fleeting, and of no consequence to them. I'm sure no one is mocking you; on the contrary, most American women find accents to be alluring and sexy, so it'll probably work in your favor!

I hope you're enjoying your time in America : )
My aunt lived in Paris for about 10 years, and her husband immigrated here. He seems to love it here, and hopefully you feel the same.

You can reduce your accent be watching the national news on TV, and repeating what is said out loud. When I was an American living in Spain, I did this for 3 weeks. My Spanish began to acquire a local accent. My coworkers were amazed.

I shouldn't think anybody would mock you because of your accent, however if someone does, it sure simplifies things. That person has identified themselves as a person you want nothing further to do with.

When you put it that way, I guess your right. It's still off putting to deal with though.

Great point. But what if you can't get rid of them?

Just an example, off the top of my head. People mock you (not for your accent, but for being a useless cunt), and you're someone people want nothing further to do with. Yet you won't leave?
