Is it normal to be intimidated by white people?

Last year i joined a rowing club at my University. It's mostly rich white people and i felt out of place as I'm black and not rich nor middle/upper class.
It's a fun hobby and experience especially being out on the water but i didn't put much effort in and i just stopped going.
I want to rejoin again this year but i'm slightly shy and embarrassed about it.
What do you think i ought to do?

Rich people intimidate me no matter what color they are.

Don't be intimidated in situations like that.

You obviously done yourself well by being in university. Don't let intimidation be a barrier to your success. Remember this is just one stage in life, how would you cope with other more important situations like employment opportunities?

I feel intimidated in these kinds of environments too. Less so as I experience them more often, though. I tended to pre-judge these people. Maybe you are too.

I'd join up again and put the effort in. If nothing else, rowing is a great work-out, plus it's a team sport, plus it's a lot of fun. If you don't join up, you'll be the one missing out on all that.

Keep in mind that they might be scared of you as well.

I doubt that very much, they're all rich and popular and good looking and seem happy and confident.

  • I think you have more of a class issue than a race issue. Do you feel intimidated by poor or middle class white people?

  • I'd like to add that some people may find you intriguing. I love meeting all kinds of people and when you stand out people notice you more and want to get to know you.

Whitey here, and hell, I'd feel out of place too. There are a few things I gave up on or didn't even attempt because of the majority high social class involved. But I don't think that's a good way to live. You have to break the mold and encourage social mixing for this world to change. That's how Paris became Paris - various social classes mixed together during Haussmanization. It may be uncomfortable, but it allows people to understand each other and learn from one another.
