Is it normal to be obsessed with a work of art?
I came across a digitally manipulated photo on deviant art.com and have been really obsessed with it. I look at it in admiration and strive to attain the same perfection as the artist who created this work of art (tropical scene). The photo contains lots of minutiae (small details) and is vivid in color. I've drawn the picture on canvas over 10 times (probably more than this) which I feel is insane because I've wasted lots of money in the process due to throwing out lots of canvases. When I find myself doing lots of erasures I end up throwing out the canvas because I like a fresh canvas. I've been to this art store lots of times and I feel compelled to keep trying until I obtain perfection. I feel it is attainable yet I know it will be a very long process which will be tedious. What's your opinion? Does this make the process of art boring or is it normal to desire capturing every single detail? Sometimes I feel frustrated with this but I strive for the attainment of pleasure and personal satisfaction in doing so.
Also I came across a post in which someone told me that wanting to capture every single detail is like an artist biting off song lyrics from the originator. He even went as far as to call me "immoral" which I think is comical because it would only be immoral if I sold the work and said that I created it without giving credit to the original artist. After this comment I was so conscientious about this that I e-mailed the artist of the tropical scene to inform him that I was going to be painting it. He had told me previously that he admired that I was trying to paint his scene. I had asked him if he would be able to share the original photo so that it would be easier for me to paint but he told me he would be unable to due to retaining his copyright on the photo. It was a photo that the artist took and digitally manipulated. Being that he said he admired the fact that I was trying to paint it, I don't feel so bad about wanting to achieve every single detail as the artist or from the other person's perspective "biting off the original work". What do you think?
