As long as they're not twilight "vampires", it should be fine. Because twilight "vampires" aren't REAL vampires. Real vampires die in the sun, are scared of crosses and don't EVER sparkle!
Im friends with a couple (and because of my behavior they think Im one too... read my questions to know what I mean) but as far as I know, they are mildly disturbed by the sun, can see their reflection, do NOT sparkle, usually perform auto-vampirism or have donors, they are not repelled by religious objects, they are only slightly pale, they have only slightly longer canines, are usually brunette, can be any personality, and they do ABSOLUTELY NOT BECOME SEXY!!!!!!!!!!
I've heard Twilight was inspired by such a dream. Just promise us you'll do a better job if you make your into a novel, OK?
Yes.
if you listen to the commentary the "meadow scene" where Bella and Edward were lying on the grass talking... straight from a dream.
That's why they sparkle - because in her dream that was the explanation on why he wasn't burning up.
She wrote the story around that scene. Giving them a history and reasons to be there etc.
Not a bad beginning. Plus it's getting people reading books.
Well, all books need to have origins. Harry Potter's plot was written in a british cafe, but HP is good literature. But it's getting teen girls to read books that make little to no sense. Even Stephen King said he hated them.
Depends... have you read the books yet?
First off, I don't personally give a rat's ass what King thinks. Although it's a bit ironic considering he's gotten bad reviews
second the biggest "issue" i find from people who hate the series (after the "sparkle" and "real vampires" issues)... is that people claim the main character has no personality and is just wishy washy.
I'm still trying to figure out just what book they read cos i never saw that. granted i'm not a teen but... when i listened to the audiobooks the impression i got from it was that she was an "old soul" in a teen's body. with the exception of when she went insane after edward left her.
but in all honesty.. most girls know how that feels when they've had their hearts broken.
and that she believed in self sacrifice for the good of others.
Do i think it's worthy of a nobel prize, or even a newberry? no. but sometimes i don't read for that... i read for entertainment and escape.
mainly i think the real issue is... what i said before... that people hate the book because of the way teens adore it.
kinda like how teen girls LOVE boy bands... therefore the rest of us have to hate the boybands
The funny thing is ... vampire romance has been around for a long time.
I blame Anne Rice, Linda Lael Miller, and Sherrilyn Kenyon
(especially LLM and SK - cos those were some VERY good romance books... ) =)
although I do admit I was somewhat disappointed when LLM switched to regular romance. I really wish she hadn't dropped the vampire series like that
Didn't those book contain authentic vampires?
I think the blame for the downfall of true vampires would go to Stephanie Meyer and her sparkly experiments.
In my opinion blaming Meyer for the "downfall" of true vampires is both inaccurate and ... very likely only a knee-jerk reaction to how much the teens lust after Edward Cullen.
Why do I say this? Because vampire inaccuracies have been around long before Meyer ever had a dream about the meadow scene. (yes that entire scene was just a dream she had - that she decided to put a plot to)
Let's start with a classic favorite - Anne Rice. Yes. Even Rice is to blame for inaccuracies.
- Vampires that don't fear crosses. Hell Louis actually LIKES them. He only "leaves" when someone pulls one out on him because he considers it to be polite.
- Body swapping. Yeah they can swap bodies. It's actually easier to lodge yourself into a vampire simply because they don't really have souls. Lestat had a bitch of a time getting his body back.
- body parts regrowing every night. Including hair. Lestat's mom went crazy for a while because of this.
- Oh and let's not forget that the Lestat series and the Lasher series are the same series. Yeah. Lestat is seriously in love with Rowan Mayfair.
Even the authors I mentioned above do NOT have traditional vampires.
Linda Lael Miller.
- Vampires can time-travel, with some exceptions.... they can travel to the past... but no further than the time of their own making. So, no traveling back in time to prevent yourself from becoming a vampire.
- I don't recall any rules against mirrors or film either.
- oh and one half-vampire girl lived without drinking blood or aging... until she met up with her soul-mate again.
- drinking witch's blood is poisonous
Sherrilyn Kenyon.
This is a big one really. Her vampires aren't really vampires at all. They're sexy descendants of Apollo (who, like his sister Artemis, drank blood). So they enjoy blood but they don't actually NEED it to live.
In a nutshell they killed one of Apollo's human wives so in revenge, he banished them from his sight (thus, no sunlight for them) and cursed them to die at the same age the wife died at. They found they can stay alive from sucking souls. They still suck blood too but just for fun.
They also cannot drink blood from anyone who's already dead or a "dark-hunter" (they're already dead and don't have souls anyway).
So yeah... I know everyone wants to bash on SM for having vampires that sparkle... but if you really stop and read other popular vampire books you'll see that Vampires have been the focus of romance books for DECADES already.
And no one follows the strict "rules" anymore anyway. In fact the only story I've seen of late that REALLY followed the rules was "Daybreakers" and even that one broke the rules by letting the vampires turn human again.
So remember - if you want to bash on one author for not following "tradition" ... remember even authors like Rice broke traditions too.
Thank you.
It was out of line for me to say that, especially since I have read none of those authors books. I suppose I was going on with the complaints of the idiotic plot line of the twilight series and fans that surround a idiotic book worth millions that was based on a dream. I have heard very little complaint with the authors you mentioned, but instead high amounts of praise. I suppose I should read their books excluding the twilight series. I wouldn't touch them with a ten foot pole.
I'll admit that I sort think of sexy vampiresses (don't know what you call a female vampire). Although, I don't think of the twilight vampire so much as just a goth girl with a thing for blood. Kind of like the Hex Girls from scooby doo.
I get told by people that I look like a vampire. I odn't know if it's a compliment or not, especially since today's vampires are just so..un-vampire like.
