Is it normal to be scared of swimming?

I hate swimming. But I don't think it's aquaphobia; I'm not scared of taking a bath or washing my hands or something. Everytime the gym teacher even says the word 'swim' I feel uneasy. But it gets worse when we actually arrive at the pool. I always feel like I'm going to die. I feel humiliated because everyone can see my body and because I can't swim very well. I especially hate diving. The fear prevents me from holding my breath under water. I always come back up after like 5 seconds.
Whenever we go swimming during PE class, I feel like crying and my hands get all sweaty.

Yep, I totally can't swim. I took swimming lessons and everything and I'm still afraid of swimming. But, like you, I'm also not afraid of water in general, for baths and the like.

You should learn how to swim in a creek or something. Go camping, It is fun.

Humans aren't born knowing how to swim. It's normal to feel this way.

Don't feel bad. My Nana's in her mid-70s and she never learned how to swim. Some people just never do, and there's no shame in that.

Perhaps you can tell your PE teacher and perhaps he or she can give you something else to do while the rest swim. I used to hate swimming in public so during PE I would walk around the pool. Though, it's not the best, but it works.
