Is it normal to be sleeping and know it but cant move

i have been having this problem about 2 times a week at least. I fall asleep and I am fully aware I am asleep. I try to move but can't. I wake up with my heart racing and am almost afraid to sleep again because I feel like I am gonna get stuck in between like someone in a coma. Also, I have had insomnia since I was a young child. I have been told by family that they had this before and your just sleeping its nothing is this true? Has anyone had a similar experience

It sounds like sleep paralysis. Totally normal.

Yes. There are neurotransmitters that become active when you fall asleep that paralyze your body to keep you from acting out your dreams in the real world.

Obviously, you can wake up, either partially or fully, before the brain "awakens" the physical body and that's what causes sleep paralysis.

I've experienced it many times, but unlike many others, do not see or hear anything unusual. For me, it's more like being in a really deep meditative state. I am somewhat aware of where my body is, but feel "disconnected" from it and am unable to use any of my senses.
One time during such an episode I had a very brief out-of-body experience. It was so exhilarating that I didn't get more than a few feet before snapping back into my body and waking up.

it happens to me almost nightly. at first it used to scare me but now if it happens I just close my eyes and I just fall asleep again. if you panic, sometimes you imagine the worst thing that could happen and start freaking out and seeing things. I think what happens is that you are not really awake but you become aware that you are asleep and you dream that you are awake and you are actually seeing an image of your bedroom in your dream

I used to get sleep paralysis when I was little I'd wake up and I would still be dreaming though, and I would see things that weren't really there and sometimes they would be people it freaked me out. Especially because I couldn't talk or move at all. My eyes opened and that's it. :/

I grew out of it though. Not sure if there is medicine for it or not but i wouldn't see a problem in talking to your doctor since its bothering you.

Sleep paralysis as stated above. I like to start with something small like a finger. If I can move my finger I can move my hand. My hand them my arm. I then use that arm to slap the shit out of myself.

When I was a kid my grandmother told me that's what happens when demons are trying to take your body. Imagine growing up in a world without internet and hearing that shit.
