Is it normal to be take everything so literally?

I am 19 and I take pretty much everything that someone says literally, and I mean each word. I have only begun to notice this and apparently I have always been like this ever since I was young according to my mother. E.g- My instructor says 'you need about 50 more hrs practice driving before going to sit the test'. Well I freak out thinking I have to drive hours on end or that it will take me months and months, where as she was just giving me an idea, I took it literally lol. And all other things including little things that I get really mad over if someone says they will do something then they don't, well I take that literally...IIN

I'm exactly like this, and I get it from my mom, who is even worse about it.

People with high functioning autism always tend to take things literally, look into it.

you may need about 25 years of therapy, voodoo cleansing and a solid religion to get that fixed

It usually takes me a second to realize whether someone is using sarcasm or not.

Oh no I didn't think what you were saying was sarcastic, I was just saying that it usually takes me a while. Idk nevermind!

I'm a lot like this. Often I have to consciously think about it to work out what someone means if they're not being literal. It's not too hard to work out if someone's being literal or not sometimes - like if they're using a turn of phrase or what they're saying sounds ridiculous if it's taken literally - but other times I don't notice they're not meaning what they say literally. It's very frustrating to me and leaves a lot of room for misunderstanding if people mean something different to what they say.

    • yeah it is real hard for me too, another example is when my neighbor said 'and don't be afraid to say hi', and I said 'I'm not afraid' my sister laughed and said 'she didn't mean it literally lol'. I then thought about it and realized she had used the wrong word, so yeah I do take trivial things pretty far...

Read about sarcasm, word-play and such. This could be a problem later on in life (Getting a job, studying at university, dating, whatever...)

        • well I do know what sarcasm is, though I don't think she was being sarcastic just trying to point out that I don't say hi or whatever...not sure.
