Is it normal to be the only one?

I've been working at a job for a year now and I love it, the only weird thing is I am the only black person that works there. It's very awkward because the people that I work with are low key racist and they forget that I am there when they say certain shit. And then I have to be the one to correct and school them.

Furthermore my co-worker always seem a little annoyed at the fact that I actually like my job and most customers work with me because of my positive attitude. Not to mention there is. Commission involved. So I barely talk with them ,even on a trivial level.Anyway I love my job but can't stand the people.

Thank you all it really does help. I will just stack my money because i am really good at this job and eventually I will have my own business where I won't have to deal with this nonsense .

I feel the same way being a white female married to a Puerto Rican. The important thing to remember is your not there to pay their bills or even to make friends. Yes, at times it is a little uncomfortable but just remember we all share this world and we have to live and interact day to day with people of all races. If it really bothers you this much go to human resources or you manager and make a complaint.

Firstly, congrats on the great relationships you have with customers leading you to get great commissions :). That's great! I'm sure you're right and there is some jealousy going on.

Secondly, the bigger issue of the "low-key" racism. It really does suck. No one should have to feel harassed or uncomfortable at work :(. I'm so sorry for what you're going though and can only imagine since I haven't experienced it myself.

What you're going through isn't right for sure. I can relate to simply not liking some of my coworkers and being harassed for working hard, because they don't want to work nor do they want to look bad. I don't know if this will be helpful to you or not, but I try to remember I'm there to make money to have a comfortable life and not to make friends, but there are some days where it feels overwhelming to me and I don't know if I'm going to quit day to day.

I'm not dismissing the real racism you're facing, but if i helps you to remember hey you're there for the money and the enjoyment of a job well done and not to make friends with those people. If it doesn't help possibly you can look for a new place to work if you think that will make you happier and more comfy. Do what makes you feel best! Best wishes!!

It's not like I didn't have conversation with my co workers when I first started. I just got turned off because of the comments and the fact that I had to correct them. It's very unprofessional for a co worker to say "that's my nigga" when talking about one of his friends. I won't be labled as too sensitive for speaking up either

Maybe they're just jealous of you, your success and happiness?

last time I had a job where there was only one black person there was no awkwardness amongst any of us...but then again he always talked to everyone, even about trivial stuff. He didn't act like he was THE BLACK PERSON he just acted like A PERSON. All I'm saying is sometimes you have to look in the mirror to see the real problem. Black or white.

Describing racism is not bitching and racism isn't about not liking people, it's about judging them on their race alone.

You are very ignorant and I suspect, racist: would you have replied in the same way to a post from a white worker surrounded by black co-workers making racist comments?

Calling out racism is not racism, in fact to say nothing is only allowing the racism to continue.

A fat 0% of problems go away by being silent about them.

Not true. My silent disapproval has done the job once or twice.
