Is it normal to be this awkward about having conversations with people

Whenever someone talks to me or I need to initiate a conversation, I feel really awkward about everything I say and really want the conversation to end as soon as possible. But when I'm not having a conversation, I wish I could be talking to someone because I feel lonely and wish I could meet more people. For the most part I avoid conversations in general because I don't know how to initiate them and most people seem to keep to themselves so I do the same.

So basically:
Not talking - I wish I was talking
Talking - I wish I wasn't talking to anyone

The more you do it, the more comfortable you should be. Go on!

I don't like making small talk. Pretty much if you catch me out and about my routine, I could care less about talking to you. If your someone I know I'll avoid you in a crafty way unless I actually have something to talk about.

Force yourself to talk more often.

Well like what buttons said the more you talk the more comfortable you'll be. The more you get to know them the more you'll have to talk about, because then you will know what similar interests you two have or others.
