Is it normal to believe in god, but not believe in religion?

I guess you could call me an atheist, as I like to consider myself. I've always seemed to settle upon the conclusion that religion is used for self serving purposes, such as "God will punish you if you tell lies" as to induce fear of God punishing thus for lying, as a sin. But I constantly struggle between the explanation of unnatural or unusual phenomena as the lack of scientific explanation, or as a universal God. Please expand on what you guys believe--for I am lost in this world of lies and false explanations.

Read philosophy, especially existentialism. There are a lot of good philosophers with theories about this stuff. We can't be sure either way, so just read as much as you can and learn what others (educated people, not priests) think. Expand your understanding on these issues and you'll feel less lost even though you still won't have your answer.

Whatever the reasoning, it's becoming more common to think this way. Many people are disillusioned with the idea of organised religion (at least the organised religions which exist at the moment), but not disillusioned with the fundamental idea that there is a God.

For what it's worth there are people who think oppositely; religion does a lot of good but the existence of God can't be supported. That is a bit closer to what I feel.

For everything that science can explain there is still a question of what was the reason that the scientific explanation came from

The cruelest trick that smiling religious tyrants use is to twist logic by ignoring contraindications and justify ideas with confirmation bias. They use other cognitive biases as well.

Suppose that "God" is simply the warm but random and inevitable processes of the universe. This is a good working belief while you explore philosophy, science, and logic.

I hold this idea to, belief in an entity but disbelief in this entity as per the literal word for word description in our holy books which are over two thousand years old

Boy are you misinformed! Try looking up the history of your "holy books" and you'll be a tad better informed and your comments won't make you seem quite so (I'm sorry, but there's just no better word) stupid.

And all those who haven't even heard of or even imagined your fucking god; how is THAT a loving and forgiving god?

The statement is against god, the man who said it was opposed to the idea of god. Read it and think about what it's saying.

It's a clever little ironic comment. As in how can his love be infinite if he inflicts eternal suffering on people.

You know, I actually caught that today, when reading some of the replies. Thanks, though.

I can't for the life of me believe in a god that allows all the horrors happening in the world, unless you want to believe it (god) is as bad or worse than the proverbial devil.
Murder, starvation, rape, genocide, child molestation; way to go protecting those you supposedly love and made in your image, god.
    Fiddlesticks.

Don't get me wrong, if there was a God overlooking the world, I'd know, along with everyone else. But as in unexplainable scientific anomalies, I confess my confusion over incrimination magnetically draws me towards a universal God.

I believe in a higher power but I think religions are man made. That is to say our choices of our way of worshiping are different and varied. There are plenty of people out there willing to take advantage of other people's fear of the unknown to manipulate and gain power and wealth. Selling life-after-death insurance.
