Is it normal to believe religion in government is bad?

I have been thinking lately, given the tomultuous controversy surrounding the most unimportant topics being discussed in American government (abortion, gay marriage, and contraception), that religion is getting out of control not only in America, but everywhere. It starts wars, it fuels hatred, it keeps people from having rights they deserve, and it is taking away focus from important things such as the suffering economy, poor educational systems, joblessness, and any form of fuel sorces. So I am wondering, am I the only one who sees religion being the noose around the neck of government? Or am I alone in this?

Quit giving churches money that just use it to make bigger churches...most churches don't really help anyone...

I've no problem with religious people being in government as long as they can divorce their religion from their decision-making. Religion is an optional and personal thing which differs amongst the populace of one country. The laws of the land are quite the opposite.
