Apparently according to my friend they are sending people to mars to make a space colony. It takes about 6 months to get to mars while it takes 2 days to fly to the moon. Apparently there is a website for it I think it is a scam. He said they are looking for recruits. I do not think it is a reasonably funded project. I do not think they have enough money to do this. Apparently according to him this is what Nasa is doing. However he believes in anything he sees on the internet. He says if it is on the internet or on a website it must be true! Is it normal I do not believe him?

    As long as they're not asking for money it's safe to give the benefit of the doubt. And if it IS that reality show I heard about, your buddy seems like enough of a drama-king to fit into that crazy, survival plot.

    I think it's best to question everything then to straight up believe what someone says, especially when they don't have proof. So yes, it's normal.

    It's actually true. I read in the news that this billionaire man basically wants to make a reality tv show on Mars and so he is recruiting people on the internet. Anyone can apply. It is not being done by NASA though.

      I do not see how it would be with the massive sand storms and rapid climate changes. It does not seem inhabitable.

    There was recently a study to test the psychological effects of disconnection for two years, apart from other crew members, with a view to a manned Mars mission.

    Maybe your friend has read about preparatory work for a Mars mission (and recruitment for the psychological study) and thinks that this means a manned mission is imminent. It doesn't mean that, and it isn't imminent.

    The funding for a mission isn't available. There will be no manned Mars mission until 2035 at the earliest (and more likely it'll be in the 2050's or 2060's). That is NASA's own prediction.

    Apparently they really are planning a manned trip to Mars but its only in the testing stages. They're trying to develop technologies that'll cut down the time the trip will take or something. And bringing along enough materials to make a little colony might be tough going. And how will you return to Earth? Landing safely and launching again from a planet with proper gravity would be tough.
    I dunno, its years off anyway. It'd be awesome if they do though.

      It's probably be doable. Mars has an escape velocity half that of the earth (which, admittedly, does take enormous thrust to break free from). But the moon has an escape velocity half that of Mars and that didn't present much of a problem in 1969.

      What I suspect will happen is that "space elevators" will become realistic (especially with the discovery of graphene) and a trip to Mars will involve the building of a space station in orbit around it.

          I'll be honest, so was I. Halfway through my posting, I realised I couldn't bring to mind what the surface gravity was on Mars so I went and looked it up. I don't know where the misconception comes from, but it caught both of us out.
