Is it normal to bite the skin around your nails?

I've always done it and usually will continue gnawing off skin to the point where I'm bleeding. I don't receive any physical pleasure from this, it actually bothers me that I do it.
I figure it's not exactly normal, (or hygenic) but does anyone else share this habit?

I used to do this a few years ago until it got to a point my nails/around my nails looked like they went through a wood chipper. If you want to stop put bandages around your fingers and let them heal.

Me too! I thought I was the only one. Yes, it is normal.

I do it too and my nails look like crap. I like how chewy my skin is and the taste. I've tried putting nasty tasting/smelling nail polish on them but I end up chewing through it. Alot of times I dont even realize they're in my mouth.

The ONLY thing that has stopped me from doing it, was getting fake nails professionally put on and left on for about two months. When they finally came off I had lost my desire to chew! I started chewing again just because I was fascinated by the idea that I didn't desire too, that was a mistake because I started again. I would suggest paying about 30 bucks to get some put on.

  • I do that but I don't actually bleed. I just bite off excess skin.

Maybe you have anxiety problems? I agree with Massotta. Or maybe you could soak your fingertips in hot sauce or something. Train yourself not to nibble on your fingers.
