Is it normal to check your bf/gf and friends internet history?

I've always wanted to be a private investigator and sometimes I find myself checking people's text messages, the history on their internet browser, and even their Facebooks (or Myspace) to see what they're really up to. Maybe I'm paranoid, maybe I'm nosy, maybe it's really for my own good because I find out what liars and cheats people really are... but is it normal? Also, I hate it when other people admit to me that they do this because then I don't trust them anymore. Ugh, I'm so paranoid and weird.

If they don't have anything to hide, it shouldn't be a problem. However, you are invading their privacy, so it's a fine line to walk. It's about trust really, and it sounds as though you've been burned once or twice.

  • Wow - I think you could learn a thing or two about respecting people. Start with yourself.

Second stalkerish story in a night. Gosh. Look at what the internet has done.

I think that you are way too paranoid. There are such things as boundaries. You are trampling all over them. You said it yourself - the idea of someone else doing what you're doing makes you feel very uncomfortable. You can't even trust someone like yourself!

The worst thing about this stalky stuff (as if it wasn't bad enough already) is that since you're so paranoid about what liars and cheats people are, it's very easy for you to misinterpret something that you see. You may find something and think "aha! blah blah blah!" but in actual fact, it's something you have no clue about. I know this because I've done this before. I'll read a comment or whatever and weave a whole story in my mind which eventually turns out to be absolutely false and unfounded. Argh...see how the stupid internet strikes again? I don't even have to stalk people to get my paranoia fed.

So, stop doing this. You may THINK that you're finding our more, but things can work against you, in a big, big way. Not to mention that people are entitled to their privacy. If you can't be a trustworthy person yourself, then how can you expect that of others?
