My cat has been chilling out with some neighbors for a while. I've had the lad since he was a small kitten and he loves me very much, but he won't come and stay. He'll come have us pet him but then he'll go back away. He is in no danger, yet I worry about him. Pls post advice in the comments

My cat is the same way! He’s the Neighbor’s favorite! They love him and I live him.
Maybe your cat found a mate 🐱 or the neighbors might be feeding your cat.
That's likely, as he was not neutered and is a male. Ill see if i can "bribe" my cat back
Why isn't your cat neutered? Of course he's going to wander, father unwanted kittens, get into fights with other cats and possibly catch diseases or get run over by a car.
There's a cat curfew where I live and in many other parts of Australia and cats have to be on your own property at all times, just like dogs. Roaming cats kill a lot of wildlife.
You're in Australia? Have you been affected by the bushfires at all? Everyone is talking about it here on mainland Europe - even in the non-English-speaking world. The footage is horrific - all those destroyed towns and animal bodies. And I've heard that besides the animals that have already been killed by fire and smoke, cats and foxes will pick off the injured ones who have little habitat left to shelter in after the fire. My sincere condolences go out to you and your people.
Thanks for your kind thoughts. I'm a couple of hundred miles away from the fires but I do live in a bushfire prone area and am not looking forward to the summer. The smoke from these fires has affected New Zealand and I read today, has drifted as far away as South America. It's certainly affecting my area and a fair bit of the rest of the continent.
It started raining here not long ago and it's heading towards the southern section of the fire area so that should make some difference, although it's always problematic when the cool change includes strong wind changes, which make it very hard to predict what will happen.
Maybe the neighbors' feed him better cat food? My cat is not allowed to roam around outside without supervision, because I don't want him attacking little birds, and mice. He'll be 13 this February, and at this point I don't think he's interested in tormenting little, woodland creatures anymore.
Sure its normal. Cats kind of choose their home.
Maybe consider, one of the neighbors needs your cats company and the kitty just knows? Or he has a girlfriend?
We feed some stray cats and my wife is always worrying about one of them
