Is it normal to count stair steps?

Every time I walk up the stairs in my school's art building I count the steps in my head. These are the only stairs that I'll do this for. I have stairs at home and in other buildings too but I won't count those in my head at all. It's only the stairs in my art building. Is it normal?

I do this at the mall, to get over my fear of the elevation of going up a level.

I think I also did it as a kid, but I think people started getting mad at me. So, now I count to myself:)

I used to do that a lot!! I still do from time to time, especially on staircases that I've never climbed before. A couple years ago, though, I used to do this obsessive thing where if I did something on one side of my body I HAD to 'even it out' on the other. Like if I tapped my left foot 5 times, I'd have to do the same on the right. Even if I didn't know how many times I tapped one, I tapped the other until it just 'felt equal'. And I also used to count the number of steps I would take in a cement square on the sidewalk and tried to keep it all the same. I'd say my obsession is much more abnormal than yours, so don't worry about it! :P

I do it too. I also count the # of letters in words on tv, steps to/from just about everything..... it feels wrong. but it is an obsession I have and that is NOT good to have obsessions. But I don't obsess to kill or hurt anybody, so it's not a bad thing in the context of the big picture. It's more annoying than anything. Good luck :)

I do it all the time. What's amazing to me is how many flights of stairs in my country have 13 steps, even though it's seen as an unlucky number here. It's obviously down to high how our ceilings are (due to how tall we are) and how we prefer the dimensions of our steps but what gets me is that if it's not 13, it's 12. It never seems to be 14.

Dude, its normal, consider it a mild idosyncrasy. I skate and when I walk up stairs, I count them too. It's just a habit, but it's not compulsive or anything. I count them because when I stand at the top of the stair, I like to size it up to see if it's skateable, or how big a x number of stair would look like if I wanted to skate it.

Now if you start changing your routine if you DON"T count stairs or miscount them, then that might be an indication for an underlying problem like OCD.

  • agree with Valkeet...

compulsing starts as just counting those stairs.

so what happens if you don't.

try to be opposite for a day and not do that.

dont just relax and dive into the counting, because its a habit that you've learned to do almost naturally.

remember its natural to not count steps.

no not normal. it would be normal if you could choose when you were going to count the steps if you deciding
"hey today i will just count them on the way down"

or how bout you count the people you see on the stairs before you yourself gets to the stairs.

change it up. spread them out, so instead of counting one set of stairs every time your on them.

one day you count all the redheads or blondes you see.

    and so forth

I used to do this at my old job, but only there.
19 steps up and down every day for seven years.
