Is it normal to discriminate against female dogs?

An acquaintance of mine recently said that he would not consider having a female dog. According to him they don't make good guard dogs and attract other male dogs to your property.
I've never had a dog and don't know if this is true, but as a woman I felt slightly offended by this view of the female gender.
is it normal to prefer male dogs?

A spayed female dog will not attract males. Most people don't get a dog as a guard dog anyway, but I would imagine that male dogs would be better as guard dogs. I've had male and female dogs (both neutered) and they didn't behave very differently. Breed is more important than sex in a dog when it comes to behaviour and temperament.

Some female dogs can be vicious, and some male dogs can be docile... Just like how people don't always conform to gender "norms."

Females are just as protective as males. I have 2 females and 2 males and if anything the females seem to protect more than the males...

It actually is normal. I'm not trying to be mean or anything because I love dogs and animals in general. ALL of them, including female dogs. But I personally wouldn't get a female dog. They're more of a hassle and have mood swings and in general aren't as friendly or playful as male dogs. Of course there will always be exceptions, but usually they're a lot meaner and more violent. But when it comes to attracting male dogs and being a bad guard dog, that's just bullshit.

But you shouldn't take it so personally. He's talking about dogs... And unless he called you a bitch I don't see him talking about you.

For Chris' sake, Lady, he's talking about DOGS, not humans. Get off your politically correct high horse and get a freakin' life!

I used to have a female dog. She never attracted male dogs because we got her spayed before she ever went into heat. Though we never had a problem with intruders or anything, I'd imagine she would have been a good guard dog because whenever my dad or siblings brought sketchy friends over, our dog's fur would stand on end and she'd growl. So yeah, I agree that the dog's gender has little to do with their personality.

My shihtzu poodle mix is a girl, and she recently got spayed so she won't get pregnant. She tries to guard the house, she barks continuously at strangers and even sounds. I don't think gender matters.

I have a female dog. she's spayed so that solves the issue with her ever being in heat and attracted males dogs or ever having litter. I like male dogs but I must admit, I do get a little uncomfortable when their penises stick out at inopportune moments, like when you're just petting them.

We have two dogs and we specifically chose males because we didn't want a litter

      • Spaying or neutering is just not fair if it's not needed cuz of their health how would you feel if someone cuts off your balls??

Even though most of Moonbow comments frankly annoy me to death. I have to agree. Spaying and Neutering your pets actually has health benefits like preventing cancer. Along with preventing unwanted liters. And they don't cut off their balls. It's very similar to a human vasectomy. There are thousands of unwanted pets put down in kill shelters daily in the U.S., Many are gassed and are not put down humanely. It's a very sad thing. If only, people would get themselves informed and fix their pets!!

You are a complete IDIOT! The world is full of unwanted pets that are put to death in animal shelters every day all because of IDIOTS like YOU!
