Is it normal to do these types of things?

A girl I know taps her book with her pencil eraser every time she reads. She rocks back and forth/ side to side, and she walks in circles and paces back and forth sometimes too. She also has no friends and no social skills, doesn't say much of anything, if anything at all, when I try to talk to her. She doesn't she any emotion through her voice or face, very rarely as far as I can see. She's also in special ed.

Today she talked to me..... but only about ANTS?! When I asked her what she does all day (hobbies and interests and other crap), she started counting on her fingers and whispering to herself, then started walking in circles in around me (I guess I was in her spot). Then she stopped, stared at something in the distance, and walked off very fast (she walks EXTREMELY fast all of the damn time).

I'm wondering if she has autism or some shit. That's it.

Autism is normal, she sounds autistic to me, and like a perfectly agreeable woman. I’m autistic, I’d happily listen to her talk about ants, I’d ask her about them, and in turn I’d tell her about snakes and basking sharks, maybe share the things I know about other invertebrates (I’m more well versed in the subject of insects than the average person, but I’m not an ant expert)🙂. Our special interests are immensely important to us.

We need to preform our repetitive actions, they are called stims and are sensory seeking behaviors that help us to think and focus, satisfy needs for sensory stimulation, express our emotions, and calm and regulate ourselves. Stims are quite different from habits and compulsions. A completely normal mental function for a neurodivergent person, repressing them has consequences. Unless a stim is harmful, it doesn’t need to stop.
