Is it normal to draw something over and over again?

So I was drawing this tropical waterfall scene over and over again until I finally achieved a drawing that is the closest I've got it to being perfect. However, I still have a burning desire to draw it over again until I achieve perfection. I feel that by achieving perfection I will derive pleasure from it and with that great self-satisfaction. However it has been mentally draining: this concern with perfectionism. Is it normal to keep drawing something until you get it right? Is this compulsion? Or is this just normal perfectionism? Help!

Work on other pieces to keep your skills well rounded.you wouldn't want to be able to draw a waterfall perfectly but not be able to draw a building or portrait.then return to the waterfall, who knows while on breaks you might learn a new skill to add to ur tropic scene

I'm a photorealistic artist. I know the drive of perfection. Of course its draining. A bit of advice is, take a break. Keep the piece visible to you but work on different pieces, then after a week or so go back to the topical waterfall with fresh eyes.try a gridding method if u have too, experiment. As artist, even when u reach perfection, you wont really be satisfied, because your skills will continue to evolve, and things that were incredible and unachievable last week are flawed, dull, too perfect, lifeless etc next week

  • Thank you tattoo artist. This is the best advice I've received. I know that perfectionism is a key thing for tattoo artists. And rightfully so. It has to be perfect if it's going on someone's body:) This makes me feel completely normal for having a perfectionistic drive. It makes perfect sense to take a break from things. I've had a break from drawing it and more time to think about it. Thanks for your advice! What is your e-mail address? We can network.

Yep. The more you draw something, the better you get and the greater your art is. But that could be said for alot of things.

Pursuit of quality is a useful trait to have, OP. Keep with it.

Normal. Of course you want ot to be perfect! Anyway, it's like there's no rule for doing that.

Tip: But also, if it doesn't look perfect, this is where editing comes in.
