Is it normal to dress pets?

The title says it all.

Whenever I see a dog (particularly a chiuaua) wearing clothes I always feel bad for them. Why you ask? I always think that its either really unconfortable for it to move around with it or that it does not want to wear it because it is hot everywhere. I mean seriously? Who would dress they cat or dog when they already have a coat all over their body?
I mean they are just putting pressure on the pet's body.

Is it okay to dress pets?

Yes! They look cute in those outfits! 7

I think people are simply anthropomorphizing their pets - attributing human needs or feelings to their animals by dressing them up. It's also a form of control, making an animal appear more human-like – but for the human's benefit. It makes them feel good about how they are treating their animal.

Unless you live in a very cold region, the dog is short haired (such as a whippet or greyhound), or your dog is sick or old, dressing your dog is a good indicator of stupidity on the part of the human.

I'm not a fan of dressing dogs up in fancy clothes, but as the lovely charli.m stated, some need an extra layer. Like my pits, the female in particular, needs a shirt in colder weather. And my boy loves to put his sweater on. It really cute how excited he gets when he sees it.

              Working on it. It's complicated.

I consider them my squishies already, though ♡

My chihuahua is just a little over two pounds, short haired and her belly is almost bare, She is always cold, unless she has a sweater on. After a bath she comes with me, sits down and pokes her neck out so I can easily slip her sweater on. This tells me she isn't against wearing a sweater. In fact, maybe she realizes she feels cozier with one on. When she doesn't have one on she shivers and cowers a lot. I live in Canada, so when it is a bit chilly out, she also wears a coat. Of course when it deep winter and freezing, she can't tolerate going out for a walk at all. This breed also originated in the Mexico area, so they are more comfortable with heat. She likes sitting on a heating pad on my lap.
So for some dogs, it can be a necessity.

tbh people who dress their pets just because they "look cute" isn't a really good reason, i mean if the animal does genuinely enjoy wearing a shirt or whatever then i guess it's okay, i just hate the people who force animals into wearing something that they obviously find uncomfortable.

of course there are times when clothing your dog/cat/whatever is necessary like in winter or if your pet has a short coat or no fur.

I don't think its abuse unless the animal is in distress.

Because some dogs have trouble maintaining their body heat...?

Hm, that is a good point. I am ok with that but with people that just dress their pets because "they look cute" I am not.

        That's reasonable.

I put my dog in clothes. He loves it. I usually only ever do it in the winter though, because it gets very cold where I am and he is short haired and gets freezing. He lives wearing his clothes then because they keep him warm, and he knows that. It's ok.

Short haired animals sometimes need clothes in colder weather.
