Is it normal to expect a financial reward?

A while back I joined a club. A few weeks into it, a girl stole my mobile phone which I had left on a chair beside me. I tried ringing it when I noticed, but she had already turned it off. When I got home, I called up and blocked the SIM card and the handset.

Anyhow, about 4 days later my mum rang to say she'd gotten a call to say someone had found my phone and had called the 'Mum' number listed. I thought they would've called 'Home' for me but whatever... I rang the girl and arranged to meet her to collect the phone. All went well, she said it must've 'fell' into her bag and I said 'no problem'. Bear in mind this is a really old phone worth about $10. My mum said I should've given her a reward for returning it!

Do you think she was expecting a reward?
If not, why bother returning it?

Meh. Some people expect one others don't.
Once my Mom's wallet was stolen. All her money was taken. She had nothing left for the month. A married man who found the wallet after it had been discarded gave it back to her, he didn't expect any recognition for it, but his wife nagged and nagged for some kind of reward. Even though the wallet was obviously emptied and there was nothing to give. Some people are annoying like that.

    • That's awful. What if he had in fact, emptied it?!

My mum didn't really believe it had been stolen and thought the girl was really nice BUT she had put her numbers into the phone and deleted a lot of mine. Then she had tried to call the numbers she had set up.

      haha I'd already it blocked!!

Can't think why she returned it.
She asked if I'd been lost without it and I said No, I got peace for a change.

I never thought to offer a reward, only because I would never expect one, plus it was stolen by her!!

I really appreciate someone making an effort to return something to me and I thank them and I'll offer them a beer. If they ask for a reward my opinion of them drops instantly. I'd cover their costs to find me though say if my cat was lost and they put an add in the paper.

It's always been my instinctive reaction to refuse the reward a few times when offered. But if they insist, I'll accept it.

In the back of my mind, though, I do HOPE I will get rewarded! But to insist upon it is petty and rude.

She was definetly expectIng a reward. People won't "help" others nowadays unless there's something in it for themselves.

If you're the one going and collecting it then I don't see why they should get a reward, infact if they have no intention of trying to reunite the item with the rightful owner then I think they are actually commiting theft.
