Is it normal to fear death this much?

A few months back a relatively distant friend passed away quite suddenly. The day after, an old school friend passed away. Both were young (26 and 29). Ever since then, I cannot shake the fear of death. It's keeping me awake at night. Every time I feel the slightest bit ill, an ache or a pain anywhere, I fear the worst. Is this a common thing? Does anybody have any advice? It might be worth noting that I'm an atheist and although I see it as a beautiful concept, religion is neither something I confide nor believe in.
I'm really struggling with this at the moment, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Any of us can go at any time so its not completely irrational but if its keeping you from enjoying life you should probly consider therapy.

I think you should just live as if you might die tomorrow... leave no regrets, live life, enjoy yourself and don't think about things too much you'll just stress.

take a chill pill, stress less and go with the flow. :)

I think it's quite normal to fear death, personally I want (as everybody one does) to know what is in the other side and when I think of someone who died,I feel upset, worried and scared.
However, you must be strong and live your life till the last day you have, we don't know when we'll die, it can be any time.
No one in the whole world is immortal, we all die,one day we will all face death and personally I have the theory that even after death we will still live, just think about it..living for a few years in earth and then when you die everything is dark forever..?It's quite stupid and impossible, I believe that we all go somewhere .
I know exactly what you're dealing with and I have to admit I fear death a lot, maybe because I am still a teen and fear about my future. Live the moment, don't think about death, don't lose your time thinking about it, go on, get outside and make memories with your friends and everyone you love!Go on and make your dreams come true !

I had a fear of dying when I was little, couldn't sleep, obsessive thoughts. It started when a relative died. It would come and go through the years. I found out that I had anxiety and ocd. Therapy has helped me. that's my personal experience not sure if it would be the same for you. Good luck!

Something that im struggling with too...majorly. I self harm alot, and...that makes me forget aboiut it most of the time. In answer to the question, i feel like you've just understood what is actually means to die. Theres no religion comforting you, because if there were, you wouldnt be scared. You've come to the bare bones. Animals aren't scared to die, they haven't the brain to even fathom it. The reason why you're scared to die, is because your're clinging onto life, and if you are a general clingey person, this is common. The main reason you're AFRAID to die, is because in some cases, maybe your AFRAID to start living. Living THIS life. Afraid of what others think...dont be. Live your dreams, and it gets easier....

If you dont believe in any thing after death then why be afraid to die there should be nothing to fear after life. The people who know you would remember you. So why are you afraid. There is no point in life and so no point to live and no point in death. I dont understand what there is to be afraid of,in your non believing and my belief in spirits.(more native/pagon/wicca is what makes my religion).
