I also grew up in the 90's which feels like an eternity ago.
Just seeing the major contrast that the 90's and the period we live in now has makes me feel really old. Even the early 2000's were different.
Same thing happened to me. Then I turned 23, then 24, then 25, and I looked back and I said "what the fuck, looking at it from this point, I wasn't old at all... I might as well stop thinking that way because in a few years I'll be looking back to where I am today and think the exact same thing".
Jesus, If you are healthy, let's trade!
I'm 66 and sailing around the Caribbean. I have been sailing all my life, professionally and for pleasure, and let me tell you, it was a whole lot easier and more fun when I was your age.
Please, please, if you are not enjoying your youth, please give me some....
Yes, it is normal. I started having such thoughts a little later than you, at 24, but they don't seem to bother me anymore. It is an in-between phase that we all go through, where we aren't kids anymore, but we don't feel like full grown adults either.
Try not to forget though, that you can still do things you enjoy and make sure that you hang out with people that won't make you feel old (because you aren't in any way). And that doesn't have with physical age, but mentality and personality.
I'm 22 and I think you hit the nail on the head when you said it's an "in-between phase". I always thought that the teenage years were supposed to be the "in-between phase", but truthfully, I spent my teenage years still going about my life like a little kid. It wasn't until I reached my 20s that I have been starting to feel mentally and emotionally out of sorts.
You feel old at every age, then look back and think 'why'? What the hell was I thinking? Its all relative when you are comparing yourself to when you were younger. Therefore you feel old at 22 because you have 22 years behind you...wait till you get to 30yrs, then 40 etc!
Best advice is to stop thinking about it!
You can drink, fuck, and go to clubs legally at 22. What the fuck is your problem?
Think of it this way, your half way to 44. ;) but don't worry about it nothing you can do. Just enjoy life while you can.
My friend, try 25. I wish I was 22, I was from the 80's I remember when the Bodyguard first came out, I was 4 and can remember belting out "I will always love you" and failing at the attempt. I remember when Mariah Carey was at her best, I remember the Titanic was my first movie to see with friends. I remember the hysteria around 2000 and remember VCR's and tapes to play some music. I remember when CD's got big, or when Aaliyah was alive. That's all old, I remember the first flat screen TV and when the Ipod came out.
I thought I was the only one. I feel like I'm stuck to the time when I was just 14. I remember almost everything like it was just yesterday (no joke). I immensely enjoyed being 14. Was the best year of my life. I felt old when I hit 15. I wanted to just be stuck in my 14 year old mind and body. and lookie, after 8 years, I still feel the same way.
Feeling totally ancient at 21. Wanted to stop growing when I hit 18 though
It's normal, but in 10 years you'll feel like you were little more than a baby in your early-mid 20s. Rinse and repeat as the decades go by.
