Is it normal to feel sad for the trash you throw away?

I am a weird person.
When you are driving down the road and you are tired of your gum, you throw it out the window.
Well every time I try it I think "This gum will be out there in the road with no friends and will get ran over hundreds of times" and I WONT throw it out the window. If there is no trash in the trash can I wont throw something away because it will be "lonely" without anything else in there.
Does anyone else think like this or am I just NOT normal. Haha

I feel bad when I throw away aluminum cans because I feel like it could have been a spaceship one day and I'm wasting it's future by not recycling it.

At work I was bored so I drew a sad face on one side of my banana and a happy face on the other. It got old after a couple of days in my drawer so I went to throw it in the bin and it landed sad face up. Made me feel extremely bad haha.

I do this often. I believe that it is a symptom of VERY empathetic people. (something that is not a bad thing!) I especially feel this way around toys/stuffed animals. No worries, It's normal!

As soon as I read this, my first thought was 'this person is lonely'. Although what you describe is humorous it clearly points towards an unhealthy tendency to ascribe human traits to inanimate objects. I googled this until I came up with something that pretty much describes what you are going through. Give it a read and see what you think. I think you are normal, just possibly lonely. Here is the link :

        http://www.chicagomaroon.com/2008/1/31/study-lonely-connect-with-objects-pets

Hope that helps to give you insight. :)

I don't just talk to them I dont even really say anything to them. I just think it and end up not throwing it away or tossing it out. I dont just horde stuff either. :)

I don't think you necessarily have to talk to the objects, but if you think about it, you are already ascribing emotions to objects. Why would a piece of garbage feel lonely? How CAN it? Maybe you aren't talking to the walls YET... That could be the next step?

i get this feeling sometimes, especially with pretty wrapping or bows or ribbons that come off stuff. I get really protective over certain things and assume they'll have sentimental value at some point later on, and they never really do, but the IDEA that they COULD is always what gets me.

  • Mrar

That is adorable and hilarious XDDD

I feel sad when things are gonna go to landfills, but not for the objects themselves. Maybe now that you but the idea in my head, I'll feel ad for non-recyclable straws!

I am exactly the same, sometimes I will go rescue the thing I threw out. mainly its things that were given to me and I see it thrown away, I get upset. Its normal, you're just a kind person with so much kindness it reaches things big and small, animate and inanimate. :)

I've felt the same as well for years. When I was younger I used to climb onto the roof of our house and throw paper planes with congratulatory messages towards the church where people were getting married. On one occasion, one of the paper planes took a different course and ended up in the road.
I cried as I watched it get run over by cars and pushed into the curb, and my mother wouldn't let me go and get it. I still feel incredible loss at the thought of leaving a stone that I've been kicking along on a walk as well.

I FEEL THAT WAY. but only about some stuff. idk, like if its something that must have had sentimental value for someone or me, i feel bad.

or if i want to recycle something, and i can't i feel bad for the thing that won't be recycled because it cant live longer or something. but it's mostly for joke's sake. hahaha

I totally used to do this as a kid--feel guilty about throwing something away, almost anything--like I was being cruel, in rejecting it, and letting it go out alone, to a filthy trash dump, or a landfill.

It didn't matter that I KNEW trash didn't have feelings... I still felt bad.

I'm mostly well past that these days--though I still feel bad throwing out things I've had for a long time. When it bugs me, I suppose I think of all the good times my trash will have with the other trash at the dump. It's good times, guy: Good timmes!

Why don't you just throw 2 things away at a time, or... In your house, when you're throwing the trash out, take 2 trash items from the first bag, and put them in the new bag? Bada bing, problem solved.

    Comment Hidden ( show )
  • i think that too. when i see trash in my yard, i feel bad for it. then if someone says im throwing this trash out, i think the trash will be sad if it isnt used or something.

I googled this cause I do the same and that's how I got to this page lol. It feels good to know I'm not the only one xD It's not all about trash though; I feel the same way with any inanimate object in general. If I see my sister's stuffed animals, I'll leave them all together, so they don't feel bad or with my clothes, shoes, etc =P

I feel that way about the rubbish I throw away. I put all my rubbish in a plastic bag that lines the bin and when it is full I tie up the bag and toss it into the main bin outside ready for collection day.
My mother says just to empty the rubbish into the main bin without the bag so I can use the bag again but I can't do that. I put all the rubbish in my bin and I feel while it's all in there they got to know each other and become friends so if I emptied it all into the main bin they would all be separated and become lonely.
It's insane I know but I can't help feeling that way.
