Is it normal to find omegle enormously pointless?

So I just started - and stopped - using a new chat website called Omegle, and it is the single most laughable excuse for an online chat service to have ever spawned. It is an atrocious insult, and so useless that you could literally have a lot more fun staring at a random image saved to your pictures folder for ten minutes.

What Omegle does is this: it pairs you up from a random individual from around the world (or from the same country as you, depending) and initiates a conversation with them.

But Omegle falls flat for a single reason: Speaking to people on it is not fun in any cirumstance. No matter who you talk to you are constantly asked the same three things: your age, sex and location (ASL), and once you've stated these three things, there's nothing else to talk about.

Worse, anybody can disconnect the conversation at any time. This means almost all conversations will last roughly half a minute. So it's literally minute after minute of failed conversations started up by bored users who don't even know why they're on there. I mean, what use is saying "ASL" when you're not even going to want to talk to this person?

Here's a convo I just had:

Me: Hi =P
Stranger: Hi ASL
Me: 20, Male, UK. You?
Stranger: 17, Male, Iowa
Me: Nice to meet you.
Stranger: Could ya do me a favor dude
Me: Ok, what is it?
Stranger: I dunno lol
Me: ?
Stranger: Do ur homework
*Stranger disconnects*

See?! Omegle is nothing more than a mean practical joke just waiting to humiliate you. It is the virtual definition of tedium, and is in no way a "great way of making new friends". It's seriously depressing to use it.

Is it normal to feel this way about it or am I making mountains out of molehills?

Having used it a bit more now I've met some really cool people and have added them on Facebook, so it's not entirely pointless, it's just something to do when it's raining outside and there's just nothing to do :P

    Stranger: hi, what's your name?
    Me: Space Boy Elroy

It's ok if you say you are a girl. Then again I only ever use it to trololololololol.

I never start a conversation with ASL on Omegle and always disconnect people who do so. I have actually had few interesting conversations with strangers, each lasted at least an hour.

That's what you get when you try to chat up kids: immature conversations.

  • A chat service does exist on the IIN website. However, it doesn't appear to be that much more successful. Oftentimes, you just get "lurkyloos" in chat rooms. You could be the best conversationalist in the world and still encounter duds. I often wonder about folks who gravitate towards chat rooms to either say nothing at all, to play "here I come and there I go and here I come again", or to talk about everything under the sun except what the chat room name suggests. There are some interesting chats on Talk City, however, the rooms are often run by self righteous swine.

I can understand wanting to rant a bit, it could've been a cool site but failed utterly. I always go on trying to start interesting conversations, bringing up philosophical queries and whatnot, and mostly they disconnect straightaway. Or try to cyber... X.x

I've never used it but I imagine if I did, I would just want to freak people out. It wouldn't be long before I was pretending to be a horse in a laboratory with electrodes on its brain so that its thoughts were translated into words to then be communicated with random people on Omegle.

Me: Yes, yes, you're really typing to an actual horse.
Stranger: Are you really a horse?
    Me: Neigh.

the best way to freak people out is when the perverts start talking then you send them a message telling them that this whole conversation was recorded then it is being reported to the authorities then immediately disconnect.

Aww, but then the fun is over so quickly. I sometimes like to play longer. :)

Omegle is an internet failure, nuff said. It's only for people with such little psychological intellect that they have to resort to it. It's occasionally fun, but very rarely productive. The people on it are moronic and the website lacks basic chatroom features, making Omegle virtually braindead.

  • Lol seems fun. I can imagine the type of things that can go on.. Chatroulette without the webcam much?

It's normal. I can't ever start a conversation with anybody on that website. It fails 99% after someone asks ASL. I've only had about three conversations that didn't completly fail. It can be a fun website though.
